Minecraft Creator "Notch" to Make Elite Inspired Game
The creator of the wildly successful "Minecraft" has finally decided what to make next. It seems that Mojang will be working on a space sim, a spiritual successor to the game "Elite" that was released way back in 1984.

"I want the space game that's more like Firefly," Notch told PCGamer. "I want to run around on my ship and have to put out a fire. Like, oh crap, the cooling system failed, I have to put out the fire here." The game is being developed with a Minecraft mentality, in that it'll most likely be playable before its finished, which is good considering that we want to get our greasy little hands on it as soon as humanly possible. "
We'll see how it goes. While the guy seems to get freeform games I've no idea if the whole "Gotta run around the ship to fix it " will turn out ok. And if it is going to be space it needs to be pretty :/

What's the difference between this and FTL? FTL even describes itself as also inspired by Firefly.
Fortunately FTL has already got a lot of buzz and has demolished their Kickstarter goal ($161K pledged, they originally wanted $10K!!!), so they should be fine. Glad they got their money before Notch started competing with them! Should be a great year for Firefly-loving gamers :-)
This guy is all over the place. Even though I'm not a fan of Minecraft (I know, blasphamy!) I like that he's investing a lot of his wealth and the weight of his booming company back into the gaming industry in ways that are meaningful for gamers.
Elite, Psychonauts 2... if this guy was already an industry darling he's working on legendary darling status.
I've been waiting for a modern version of Frontier (the sequel to Elite that came out in the early 90's). So this is very exciting.
I'd like to see him join forces with the "Infinity: Quest for Earth" guys, or maybe even David Braben himself (one of the 2 guys behind Elite, responsible for Frontier, and possibly already working on Elite 4 in some fashion). I hope this project is able to realize it's potential.

Agreed. Notch has built up some major street cred.
As much as he spooges over Legend of Grimrock, I'm surprised Mojang is not doing one of those.
But that said, I love me some space sims, and I would especially like to see some that mix game types, rather than just sticking to one. Ie, rather than flight-only with menus for planet or station interfacing, like most space sims seem to be, let me walk around INSIDE the ship and even exit the ship. Almost all spaceflight sims make the player basically be the ship. I want to get the feeling I'm inside the ship piloting around, and not that I'm the ship itself.
