Halo 3 Viral Marketing Campaign Underway?

Somehow, Team Xbox was among the first to break the news that an Irish company has created technology for Free Energy:

Quote:
Steorn, an Irish technology development company, claims to have discovered a technology based on the interaction of magnetic fields that allows the production of clean, free and constant energy. In theory, this should be impossible as it breaks the first law of termodynamics.

Today, Steorn has placed an advertisement in The Economist this week to attract the attention of the world’s leading scientists working in the field of experimental physics. From all the scientists who accept Steorn’s challenge, twelve will be invited to take part in a rigorous testing exercise to prove that Steorn’s technology creates free energy. The results will be published worldwide.
Here is the link to the company's website.

Almost guaranteed. Each of the images shown when you click on the tabs at the top (Home, News, Forums etc) has a 'swirl' look to it, which corresponds to the swirling clouds over the relic in the Halo 3 Announcement Video.

The kicker: check out the image in the last tab, 'Register.' It's the only one without the swirl pattern. It is, however, a honeycomb.

Can you say "I Love Bees"?

I'm getting nothing from that first link...did they decide to kill this sucker off that quickly, or is their server swamped?

Edit: Had trouble at first, but got the site now.

Does Halo 3 really need any marketing at all?

Mankind becomes the forerunners. How surprising.

EDIT:: Unfiction already has a thread about it.

Is this free energy deal the same as this:
http://today.reuters.co.uk/news/arti...-ENERGY-DC.XML

Because if it is, and it's in fact a marketing campaign, people have been had bad. The associated press is posting this news for crying out loud.

Any bets that any 'experiments' they were conducting were done at some research lab of theirs that happens to be in Africa?

I don't know guys... this doesn't seem to have anything to do with halo. I don't see the connection at all. I followed ILB very closely as it was ingenius, but this? It's got nothing that would make me suspect it had anything to do with Halo.

That'd be, like 10 minutes walk from where I work.
I'm tempted to see if they exist.

I highly doubt this has anything to do with Halo 3.

For one thing, the company's page archives on the Internet Archive go back as far as 2001, and the domain was registered in 2000.

At which time they were apparently supposed to be a e-commerce consultiong firm. By 2002, it had changed to consulting on technology projects. In 2003, they added a webhosting service to said tech consulting. On the 19th of September, 2004, the site went down for "reconstruction" and was still so as of Feb 05, 2005, when archive.org made it's last cache of the website.

Google has a cached version of the page from the 26th of July, which has no mention of the energy project at all, only mention of optical disk analysis and plastic card fraud prevention.

Just about every live page concerning the company sprung into existence a meer two days ago, from it's website, to the various news articles, to the Wikipedia entry.

Someone at Wikipedia did dig up this one though, from May of this year: http://archives.tcm.ie/businesspost/...story14326.asp

They also did apparently publish a paper on the credit card fraud thing: http://www.imaging.org/store/epub.cfm?abstrid=31863

So while the company itself may be a fraud, I doubt it is within Bungie's power to pull of a hoax involving archives that stretch back the last 5 or 6 years.

Please do. I'm similarly curious. Interestingly, according to the WHOIS records, their site isn't even hosted in Ireland, but British Columbia.

Is it within Microsoft's power?

Ahhhh, I got excited for nothing.

I thought we'd finally have clean sustainable energy, but it's just Halo 3.
