Who said that epic and expansive fantasy RPGs had to have subpar gameplay? For as much as I absolutely adore games like Fallout 3, Mass Effect 2 and Skyrim, gameplay in those titles simply didn't live up to the amazing standards set by their superb settings, narratives and quest structures. In Fallout 3, VATS was simply an excuse for its inherently clumsy combat, and for as much awe as Skyrim instilled in me, in-game fighting is sloppy. Good news, then, that Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning has come along.
Reckoning proves once and for all that great role-playing experiences don't have to sacrifice what matters most in any game -- gameplay -- while still remaining true to all of the minutiae that makes the best RPGs great. And while Reckoning certainly has its own flaws, I still found myself utterly satisfied with my experience and anxious to parlay the good news to fellow fans of the western RPG. Reckoning certainly isn't a game you should sleep on. Quite the contrary: Amalur demands your attention.
Can anyone say if it controls better from PC or Console (Xbox?). Or really the crucial question: Does it support the game pad on PC?
I played the demo on Xbox and liked it, but playing a rogue/mage hybrid made me have to flip between spells and weapon attacks a lot and I felt like I was going to need serious practice before I had some smooth combat down.

The PC version has perfect gamepad support, it automatically sets everything up when you plug in the controller. Mouse and keyboard controls don't work as well as the controller IMO.

Indeed, as a PC gamer I'm going the gamepad+PC version route and I've seen a lot of people say the same. It's clearly designed for a gamepad even though it works reasonably well with a kb+mouse at least based on the demo.
Thanks for the quick and informative replies, gents!
I'm kind of torn on whether or not to do Steam or Origin for this... can I do both? I don't know. I don't love the idea of either system running in the background and I have had some issues where Steam doesn't want to connect (or allow me to start offline mode) when my latency is bad. But on the flip side, everyone hates Origin and I love bandwagons.

What to do?!
The Origin version only needs to be activated once online, after that you can play it offline without Origin running. The Amazon digital version is the cheapest I've seen for PC and it requires you to activate it on Origin.
I liked the demo, but I really need to put some time into MW3 and BF3 to get my money's worth. Plus I beat Batman: AC on a fairly fast playthrough so I want to go through it once again, complete some challenges, etc... Since it is on Steam, I'll probably snag it for some crazy deal when they have it. Enjoyed the demo so I'm keeping my eye on this one.
Newegg actually had a special promotion for Amalur for PC where you inputed a code and it was reduced to $48. It was only for the 18th and 19th of Jan. I got it luckily, but as far as I know has not been renewed.
