Man, that looks like fuuuuun! I'm so glad I got this game. (I hope I don't have to wait for an empty nest to get into this and others! My backlog is shameful!)
I enjoyed what I played of Terraria but it's not nearly as fun playing alone. The few multiplayer servers I've been too have been farmed out a lot with massive buildings made already. Normally that wouldn't be a bad thing, ala Minecraft but since it's more of an rpg than sandbox you need the combat items to do boss fights, exploring etc
I have this game and I love this game. These guys understand how to do updates, where you don't just add fluff, but actual content.
However, the trailer... yikes. Maybe filling the screen with particle effects sells a game for some people, but for me it just looks like a big mess that I would pass on if I didn't already know how much fun the game really is.

We need an evav server. Also, that remix that played in the background was orgasmic.
I have a spare computer at home that is always on the 'net. I was thinking of setting up a Minecraft server. I think that machine has 4 GB of RAM. Sound like enough?

Am I the only one who has no idea how to play this game?
Dig. Build.
First thing you do is cut down some trees and build a house. Make sure your house has a roof and a back wall or zombies might spawn inside it.
After that it is a building game... dig to get resources and treasure and then make your house into whatever you want. The more stuff you build the more stuff you can build.

I used to run 3 different server instances off my computer as I played on one. It didn't lag for the 8-10 people that played across each world. The computer I was running off is made for BF3 and had 8Gb of ram. When they made the server files for the game they made it so it didn't need a dedicated Video card to run a server. It's very optimized to run on a crappy computer as long as you have a decent internet.
While I am at it a good guide to setting up a server without the need for Hamachi is here: Guide.
Darn lack of edit button on News posts. People have ran 1 server instance for 8-10 people off a 1ghz, 2gb of RAM computer to give an idea of what is possible. It had minor lag (about .5 second lag) at 10 people.

I grabbed the game on the sale and I have just two questions:
How the hell do I get a jetpack?
Also, how do I make enough money to buy that light helmet?
Named baddies and chests contain gold pieces. Golden chests contain unique items. Silver and copper are found in pots, and drop off common baddies. The first NPC you see in the game is the greeter. His tooltips are actually VERY useful, and if you bring him an item that says "craftable" on it, he will tell you what you can build with that item. I.E. bring him a piece of gold ore, and he will show you everything that requires gold ore as an ingredient.

awww, don't start another minecraft server I want to play on. I already have one with me and just a couple other friends...
As for Terraria, it's fun, and I see why a lot of people like it, but it's just not for me. I prefer the build/explore aspects of minecraft to the craft/fight aspects of Terraria. Especially with all the generated features that have been added to Minecraft, such as the strongholds, ravines, rivers, larger biomes, etc.
I have a single player world that I've been slowly mapping and building, and generally devoting hours and hours of gameplay into, and now I'm back on my multiplayer server, starting all over, and loving it, because it's all new to explore and learn.
Also, how do I make enough money to buy that light helmet?
Jetpack? Do you mean rocket-boots? Those drop during the goblin army invasion.
This is a progression game. Unlike Minecraft where you can pretty much get everything right off the bat, you actually have to build up before you can get to certain areas or things in this game (well, most people have to at any rate). One of those is the mining helmet. Once you can afford it, you will suddenly have tons of gold and wonder what to do with it.
That's one of the biggest weaknesses of Minecraft actually. The danger you encounter when mining diamonds is exactly the same as the danger you encounter when mining anything else--little to none.
But the mining helmet is actually annoying to me, because to use it, you have to actually wear it as your armor, which means you can't ever wear a complete armor set to get the bonus AND have a light helmet. You have to choose one or the other.
Most people (well, me) choose the mining helmet, which makes the complete set bonuses pretty useless.
