The interface seems it would be quite annoying in the long run. Movies, pictures and music, all searched for in that veritcal scroll style. It would take an awful long time to find what you want.
Because it can surf the web, wouldn't that lead to some potentially big problems like viruses and piracy?
Looks empty. But I might be one of those people that needs something solid behind the active stuff. For example, I hate the Gimp simply because the tools just float around on top of the desktop. Call me old-school.

Mabe since its a "Computer" you can put your own backgrounds on it just like a PC

I'd imagine they'd have an option for switching to a tiling view or something better when a list gets too populated, the way they have it is great for quickly choosing between a small number of things. I'm a little dissapointed they weren't showing how the motion controller could enhance general browsing, but it seemed pretty early. Personally, I'd be busting my hump to get that functionality in there.
I hate the way she holds the controller. Everytime I see someone holding a joystick like that a little part of me dies. But meh, its just me. I really was expecting something abit more innovative than to use the PSP interface. Like "Hey, guys were out of good ideas, lets use some old ones".

You can do that on the PSP, so I'm sure you'll be able to on the PS3.
And just from my experience on the PSP, I think this'll work out fine. The big thing is if you're the type to just throw all your media onto something (in this case the PS3) in one big chunk, yeah, it'd get annoying trying to find something you're looking for.
But, if you're like me, and you organize, and divide things into folders, this interface actually works quite well. At least, it has for me on my PSP.

Microsoft's Media Center for Portables works very similar to this, just put the horizontal line at the top instead of centered. That said, if the Sony interface works similarly, it won't be hard to find stuff at all because it will scroll very quickly if you keep the button pressed with navigating the verticals.
In the Microsoft interface, they even flash a big letter or number to the side of the quickly scrolling list so you know which section you're in, sorted alphanumerically by whichever key you're sorting(artist/album/title/genre/etc.). In a very large list of media, you just slow down the scroll in the apropriate section and start reading the titles.
It'll be easy and if they've already got something that works great in the PSP I don't blame the for not reinventing the wheel, especially when it is in their best interest to promote interoperability between the PS3 and the PSP. MS is doing the same thing between the 360 and devices using MMCfP.
I'm pretty sure this was poster on Evil Avatar around E3. I like how the demonstrator has no clue about anything and even calls the shoulder buttons, mouse buttons.
I think the feature that would top off the interace would be a searchlight feature ala OSX. That way you can leave things unorganized and still find them. It would also be very easy to bring up an on screen keyboard and select a couple letters to find what you are looking for.
I'm not impressed, although I've always liked the PSP interface. I guess I expected more from Sony. I didn't expect Sony to literally RIP the PSP interface off and slap it on the PS3. I was half expecting an interface that was half tech demo that would show off what the PS3 could do. Gimmie crazy lighting, motion and particle effects. Make my menu experience just as memorable as the games
