James Benson, the guy behind the excellent Dance Fortress, has been waving his magic video-making wand again. This time he's come up with an "alternative" trailer for the original Half-Life.
Some of those graphical improvements are really neat, please someone tell me they were added to the Source version of Half Life at some point and I'm just unaware of it.
Extremely well done, but I didn't like the bits in the ventilation shaftsbecause he got the dimensions wrong. Gordon wasn't on elbow and thighs, he was on his hands and knees. . . those are big ventilation shafts and moving as slow as he does in the video would take forever. His animations for that were amazing though.
I would play the crap out of this. Goes to show that good design and immersion beats "omg uber" graphics every time.
He isn't enhancing the game design of Half-Life. He is adding visuals (graphics and animation) to a game with amazing game design. The fact that you think this enhances gameplay shows how important good graphics and animation are to gameplay.
Plus, I'm not sure whether or not he created a game build that has these new animations or if he just added them to the existing trailer.
I'm currently on my first play-through of HL1. I'm about 10 hours in (Forget About Freeman! / Lambda Core).
Limbs would have made me a much happier camper, considering how infuriating the horrible platforming is - jumping from surface to surface, moving/aligning boxes, climbing ladders.
Still an excellent game, but I'd prefer those elements had not been in there with the tech limitations they had.

Ugh. Just finished the game. Xen and most of the bits that followed were interesting but a goddamn pain in the ass. Not only did I miss my platform about 40% of the time, I missed activating the longjump at least half of the time. My CTRL pinking and my SPACE thumb just weren't in agreement.
Still, it was an excellent game and worth the time to go back to it.
Time for HL2 (skipping Opposing Force and Blue Shift for now).
