Metal Assault Beta Begins, PvP Trailer

Aeria Games has announced that the closed beta has begun for GNI Soft's 2D side-scrolling run ‘n’ gun shooter, Metal Assault.

Quote:
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – April 1, 2011 – Aeria Games, a leading global publisher of free-to-play online games, today assured eager players that it’s not an elaborate April Fool’s Day joke—Metal Assault officially opens its battlefields to Closed Beta participants on April 1.

Bullets are just the beginning in this fast-paced, frenzied action shooter. Select a character from 4 player classes, blaze through missions, and conquer bosses to discover the truth behind a mysterious underground military lab explosion in the City of HERZ. Bulk up your weaponry and armor as you blast through waves of enemy troops in Metal Assault’s PvE, PvP, and Co-Op game modes. Metal Assault’s Closed Beta testing period is packed with a plethora of fun events for players:
  • In Game Events – Win Exclusive CB and OB Reward packages, AP Prizes, EXP and Upgrade Licenses in exciting PvP and Rank contests.
  • Forum Contests - Collect exclusive CB wallpapers, design a Metal Assault Poster or submit your coolest gun design idea for in-game awards and AP prizes!
  • Facebook/Twitter - Daily Metal Assault Trivia Questions, prize raffles, and ongoing number of “Likes” contests throughout the CB period!
Closed Beta participants should visit the game’s official website to download and start playing: http://metalassault.aeriagames.com.

That's what they're going for; a Metal Slug MMO.

Played it for a bit, did not like it. When I jump around a sniper and blast him at close range with a shotgun 3-4 times and does not die and he gets one shot off on me and I die instantly, there is a problem.

Why does a game like this need a beta? Ridiculous.

You haven't realized yet? These days, a beta is not so much a technical tool as it is a marketing tool. It's the free taste by which they intend to aggressively use conversion techniques to convert you into a sale.

...because any sort of game involving large numbers of people on wildly varying hardware tends to have a lot of unforseen bugs and balance issues?

That's often what the F&F and Closed beta are for. Open beta is often more a marketing tool than a bug finder.
