Sony Downplaying Expectations For Initial Move Sales, Hopes To Build Momentum

It looks like Sony's upper management is not expecting retailers to be swamped with demand for their upcoming Move add-on when it hits retail just over three weeks from now. In an interview with Eurogamer, Sony senior vice president Ray Maguire says that he expects positive word-of-mouth about the device will lead to sales momentum building up over time:

Quote:
"Exactly as with EyeToy in the PS2 days, it's a product that needs to be sampled. You need to get your hands on it. You need to understand it. You need to try it.

"Am I expecting a massive day one? Not particularly. We didn't with EyeToy, either. It went on to be massively successful. As people saw the value when they tried it they told their friends. Their friends bought it. They told their friends. Word of mouth grew the marketplace. That's what I expect from Move as well."
It should be noted that there were less than 20 EyeToy-specific games released across all regions.

I would hope that Sony is setting the bar of success for Move higher than what they achieved with the EyeToy which--while it had some really fun and innovative party games--was hardly a game changer last gen.

LOL....EyeToy and "Massively Successful" in one sentence! What a joke. It sold, but was not massively successful. The PS2 or PS3 could be considered massively successful, but not the EyeToy.

What we need is a system to map waggle gestures to easy button presses. I think that's the wave of the future.

The third party support for eyetoy only titles were non-existent at best. I didn't know know that Sony was setting this up for such a failure.

That may be true, but there were a ton of games which added some kind of EyeToy functionality, such as the Karaoke Revolution and DDR games. Maybe that's what Sony is banking on with Move as well? Not so much that they'll see a boatload of 3rd-party Move-specific games, but that lots of 3rd party developers will implement some kind of expanded functionality into their games that utilizes Move? That might not be a bad strategy to promote Move sales, but I doubt it's going to do much to extend the PS3 life-cycle the way Microsoft (foolishly, imo) seems to think Kinect will extend the 360's.

I don't remember ANY of my friends owning an Eye Toy...

I think Move will outdo the Eye Toy for sure.

Wouldn't momentum be in favor if it was going downhill? Sony is trying to build momentum isn't that was the article said?

The picture is more a reflection of my thoughts on the Move's chances of significant success if they're expecting weak initial sales followed by word-of-mouth recommendation to build the necessary steam for the add-on to reach critical mass.

To state the obvious, it's hard to build momentum when you're pushing uphill (as Sisyphus was cursed to do for eternity).

You forget that word-of-mouth is exactly how the Wii caught on in terms of popularity with non-gamers. Sony is basically saying they don't 'need' the Move to be successful (unlike MS needing Kinect to be successful, some would argue) and if it takes off-- great. If not, the casual market wasn't ever their focus anyway, only a passing fancy.
