Microsoft recently held it's Q3 earnings conference call. Of course the XBox 360 was discussed and some stats given.
1.7 million Xbox 360 consoles shipped, bringing sales to date to 3.2 million consoles with 1.8 million in North America, 1.1 million in Europe and 300,000 in the rest of the world.
Despite a relatively small installed base, three of the top 10 selling video games in the US in March were for the Xbox 360 platform.
Attach rates on the Xbox Live service remain strong, with more than half of all Xbox 360 consoles sold connected to the service either via Silver or Gold tier memberships.
Still on track for 5-5.5 million by end of Fiscal Year (June)
"The company's Home and Entertainment segment, which makes the Xbox 360, increased revenue by 80% to $1.1 billion due to strong demand for the console. But the division's loss grew even faster, ballooning by 121% to $388 million."

Good amount of 360's sold. Glad it's doing well, it's a good console.
It always impresses people when I show them the 360. The way you start games online, getting into game with buddies etc. The bonus is the nice graphics . I've sold so many 360s to friends it's crazy.

agreed - though the thing that most impresses me, and most people i show it to (at first) is the amount of noise the thing makes. then they get to see the nice graphics and on-line stuff. sad but true.
PJ McNealy (analyst firm, I know) also states that they're on track to sell between 10-12 Million units by the end of the year. As Peter Moore always says - first to 10 million wins.
For reference, here's what the PS2 moved in the first year (NPD):
If Sony has launch suppy issues, they could be in some real trouble. Especially given the fact that by the time they ramp up supply, they could be staring Halo 3 in the face.
But anyway, the most impressive thing to me about the 360 numbers is that the console already has 3 titles that have sold over a million units. That's crazy.
Funny they are using the lovely "shipped" word like Sony likes too. They are going to sell 1.8 million 360's next month to reach goal. I don't think so.
I'm glad the 360 is doing well. It will force Sony and Nintendo (even though the Big N has stated their not competing with MS or Sony) to bring their "A" game. The competition between the 3 is going to be good for the consumers/gamers.

Well it would be April, May and June. These are the stats ending March 31.
I guess part of it (the race to 10mil ) depends on when Microsoft is willing to do a price drop. Huge chunks of the market wait for the first price drop before buying... even if the bloody drop is 20$.
Ive never much understood this group, but then, I dont know why chickens still run when you cut their heads off. I decided, this is an ok thing.

Heh... I totally agree with you. I don't understand saving $20 to wait almost a year to play a console that you want. However if the drop is $100 that is a different story. Personally, I don't have the patience.

Yeah, but in this case its a bit worse because they are basically claiming all of those 360's sitting on the shelves of Japanese stores are "sold," when even the most staunch fanboy knows this is not the case.

Well, for one, first generation systems tend to be fairly flawed pieces of hardware, evidenced by all the issues people have been reporting about their 360's. Furthermore, first generation games are usually average at best.

No they aren't. 300,000 for the rest of the world is what they said. That includes Japan, Australia, Korea and whatever other territories they sold in besides US and Europe. I believe the last numbers for Japan was 150,000, and Australia was 80,000.

Thats a different mindset though. Waiting for games you like to be released ( and thus the systems to be more stable) is one thing. However, I know many people simply wait for the first price drop... almost religously. I cant think of a time where the price drop was more then 50$, except when the console maker screwed up hard and was losing money to catch up ( Sega ).

Well I understand it. The $20 price drop on the console is just the proverbial straw. Alot of games for the system will be $20 or $30 instead of $60 after a year. It's a massive savings if consider the software too.
NOt to mention you'll have alot more games to choose from, the 2nd-gen games will be coming out after a year and you'll get a better idea of which games were hype and which weren't. You also give the manufacturer time to work out any kinks in the hardware. Last you get a better idea of how much support a console is getting.
Plus most folks just aren't as hardcore about gaming.
