Marvel vs Capcom 3 Shown at Captivate

Marvel vs Capcom 3 was shown at Captivate, Capcom's annual press event this past week in Hawaii. PlanetXbox360 has all the details and EventsHub provides a nice bullet summary.

Quote:
- Confirmed characters so far are Wolverine, Spider-Man, The Hulk, Magneto, Storm and a few others will return.

- The Marvel vs. Capcom 3 development team said they will be blowing fans out of the water with the sheer number of characters this game includes on the disc.

- This will be another 2D fighter gameplay-wise but will be something of a cross between the original Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Street Fighter 4.

- The rumored release date is late 2010 or early 2011 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, no plans right now for other systems.

- The game will run in 1080p resolution.

- It will be a disc-based release.

- Apparently the game will have unlockables again.

- Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will be playable at this year's E3 which is held on June 15 - 17th.
Can't wait to see the visuals at E3

I maintain that "blowing gamers out of the water" with the number of characters is not a good thing. How can new players get into fighting games when they keep making games that you have to play, like, 40 times before you can even fight against the same character twice?

It completely places at an inaccessible distance the factors that make these games fun. Knowing your character and knowing your opponents.

Very much looking forward to getting my hands on this one! Fond memories of playing this in the arcade and on the Dreamcast!

Huh. I think that's the first time that I've ever seen anyone complain about too many characters in a fighting game, other than for balance or pointless repetition issues.

I feel very strongly that it's why the genre died.

With each and every iteration the games only get more and more exclusive to the people who are into "that game"

I mean, I very much enjoyed fighting games, but the joy in fighting games only comes when you know your what your character can do and what your opponent can do. That's when the depth and the strategy comes in. Until you get to that point, people just kind of play a round of whatever character they think looks neat and then they're done with the game. On to somethign else. A total of a half hour or so spent.

Street Fighter had it right with 8 characters. Sure it got boring after a few years, but when it was new... that was the perfect amount. And to MOST gamers in this day and age... ALL fighting games are new to them.

I for one hope they mean more by adding more characters than even MvC2 had. I liked the sheer amount of different people you could pick and choose from, forming your own team. Part of the appeal that MvC2 had for me was how quick and crazy it was. I've been waiting for this title for ages, now that I'm getting this and Sonic 4? Fuck yeah, I'm pumped for some games.

So are they going to add current mainstream Marvel characters like Ms Marvel, Moon Knight and Iron Fist? X-Men like Rogue and Psylocke aren't so hot anymore?

Eventually, one grouping rose to the top though, even with all those characters.

Yeah, Jazz is weird like that. I get his point, but I think the robustness and accessibility of the fighting engine can make up for this. Fighting styles also play a pivotal role. But really, if you're going to play this type of fighter and be competitive you're going to spend hours with the team you make, so it's sort of a mute point. In other words, certain characters are going to appeal to you more so you'll likely gravitate to them. Furthermore, the tag-team offered in the series allows you to pick characters who can compensate for any weakness. It's an amazingly, strategic game if you want it to be (and a mindless, over-the-top button masher if you want to take that route).

Dude, if they use the Tatsunoku vs. Capcom engine then this game will look ridiculously gorgeous. I love the style of that game. Just adding some sophistication to the controls and you'd have a good base to build off of.

I have to say the genre is reborn in console and online play. SFIV's popularity has been explosive. There are 4 to 5 tournaments every weekend in all parts of the country. Sales of SFIV, MvC2 and SSFII beat expectations. EVO is absolutely huge now.

Surely you can't expect them to leave out Marrow!

They definitely need better Marvel villains too. Magneto and Venom are great, but Shuma-Gorath? Spiral? Blackheart? There are so many other classic villains they could use!

Considering everybody only uses the same 4 characters...with infinite combos and assists...we really don't need more than 10 chars
