It appears that a new issue has cropped up with Modern Warfare 2 thanks to the lovely website Petition Online. A group of colorblind gamers have decided to start up one of these "sign if you agree" things, trying to have Infinity Ward patch MW2 for better colorblind support. Their complaint is that they are at a severe disadvantage thanks to the colors used to highlight friendly and enemy activity.
Quote:
At present, people that are red / green colour blind cannot tell friend from foe in the online matches, as their names appear in these colours, and the radar uses the colours too. This is causing frustration and putting them at a distinct disadvantage unless playing in Free-For-All matches.
This makes the grand majority of the online multi-player mode unplayable for red / green colour-blind people. They need to take that extra bit of time to determine whether people are on their team, which more often than not results in their death; or otherwise accidentally shoot at their team-mates, giving away their position on the radar.
Call of Duty: World at War had an option to change the colours from red / green to orange / blue, and the Ghost Recon games have also had a similar feature. With this being such a huge release, this option should come as standard, especially when almost 10% of people are affected by colour-blindness in some form.
It would be nice to have this option patched in for those that need it. Seems almost like a no brainer.
That's a terrible oversight, but it could be corrected if they really want to do so. The first game that pops into my mind is Peggle, which has a colorblind setting. Much simpler game, admittedly, but the point is it can be done.
This can be solved. Whether it will be is another matter entirely.
Agreed. Sounds like they need a quick customization area for colors. While they are are at it why not font size as well. A color-blind friend of mine would be affected by this if we didn't already have a preexisting condition of completely sucking at FPS games. Poor bastard.
If only there were a way to create your own content/patches to modify the game. Wonder if anyone's ever thought of that.
My Dad's red/green color blind. First time he went to Calgary he couldn't tell if the traffic lights were red or not (the lights in calgary at the time were on their sides). He had to wait to see how the other drivers reacted to them.
People have used color blind settings in FPSs to have a site acquisition advantage in the past. Still consider the bad balance in MW2, this fix would only be a help to many.
I agree that it would be a nice feature for those afflicted. But use the uniforms and not the names to determine FoF. It is actually more reliable as the names do not always come up right away. Playing hardcore would also balance things as there is no radar and everyone uses cold blooded so the UAVs are worthless. But hardcore is not what it was in the last game.
TBH, I never really considered this as an issue. Kudos to EvilAvatar for bringing it to my attention, as this is something that anyone can easily get behind.
Yeah, i signed it too. My best friend in college was colorblind, and every time we walked down the railroad tracks on our way to high adventure he would get excited every time he saw the semaphores..."alright, it's white!" yeah, it was red.
Agreed. Sounds like they need a quick customization area for colors. While they are are at it why not font size as well.
I consider fixing the FOV (or adding it as an option) to be in the same class as adding options for colorblind and font sizes. As in, every game should have those settings but very few do because MS/Sony hate options in games.
My buddy is red colorblind actually. It's worse than just not being able to use the radar easily; the red dots are almost invisible to him, the red band that's supposed to show where enemy fire comes from is as well. And while it is kinda funny to watch him try and play using red-dots to unlock stuff, it really would be an easy fix.

Maybe he shouldn't have been driving in the first place?
The real question is how long until they redo the game in braille to support the blind?
What about for specific controls for those with only one arm?
What about controls for those with no arms?
Huge oversights.
Try comparing similar things the next time.
