Fallout 3: Broken Steel Sold Like Crazy, More Expansion Still Possible
OXM have been chatting to the PR guy at Bethesda Softworks Pete Hines. He had some interesting things to say about Fallout 3 DLC.
Quote:
And is Broken Steel the last DLC for Fallout 3?
Yes, that's the third of the three things. Whether it's the absolute last one remains to be seen. Because it's been hugely successful. Operation Anchorage vastly exceeded our expectation. It was like "holy shit, we did how many?" And the Pitt was really successful, after a bit of a false start.
But Broken Steel is the one that. when we first announced all three, this is the one that everyone has been bugging us the most about, because it removes the ending and changes the level cap and lets you play more in that world. I think it's going to be hugely, hugely popular.
I loved Fallout 3, but now that I've beaten it and goozexed it off so long ago, I really don't feel the desire to get back into it. I might pick it up again on pc for a few bucks in a couple of years if there are any particularly good mods I want to play.
I was really exited to get this new DLC, mainly because of the new level cap. Sadly it feels like I'm getting weaker with every new level. I know games should get harder as you go on, but I could kill the level 1 mobs with 1 or 2 shots to the head, where as now at level 21 I have to expend damn near all of my ammo directly into the face of every enemy I encounter.
It feels like the enemies are leveling up faster than I am, like at level 1 every enemy was level .5, but now at level 21 all my foes are level 25. Simply put, it sucks. If anyone knows of a mod that removes the scaled difficulty I would be very thankful.
The only thing I have to say about the difficulty of enemies in that game is that it seems different weapons work better than others for particular types of enemies. i.e the hunting rifle worked great for raiders but sucked on robots. I also don't use VATS as much anymore if you just aim at the head and hit them without VATS you do a lot more damage.
I'm sure I'll end up getting the expansion, I just have so much play left in the game even though I'm almost finished with the main quest and just hit 20.
Lost: Pete Hines is a swell guy, but he's far from the CEO of Bethesda. He's their head PR guy.

Some of the new enemies are sickeningly tough, but like Chrome Dome said, most of the time its about having the right tools (and skills) for the job. I chose to start with a high intelligence, and picked up the educated and (the perk that gives you 2 points per book, can't remember it) perks, so I had a truckload of skills points. By 20, I had most of the combat skills capped off, so it became a matter of simply keeping the right weapons handy.
Radscorpions are particularly vulnerable to shotgun blasts. Super mutant overlords are beastly tough, but if you're patient enough to sneak up behind one, a single frag grenade pickpocketed *into* their pants does the job. Reavers are bad news, I actually kept a fat man launcher and a few mini nukes handy for those. Though I never actually checked one to see if they had pockets.
Lastly, sentry bots, though present since the original game, still tend to waste a lot of ammo. If you didn't take the robotics expert perk, one nuka-grenade (use vats to avoid possible scatter) tends to reduce them to one or two laser rifle shots-worth of hit points.
If they would put it on steam so we can get it, they would have even more sales. Many of us REFUSE to use that crap called GFWL, as long as that is the only option, we just will not get it.

QFT. I'd LOVE to give them my money. They're not making it easy for me though.
