No one HAS to join Live. She knew the ToS when she clicked "I Accept". If she really had a problem with the terms she shouldn't have accepted and certainly shouldn't have rewarded MS with her money if she found it offensive.
I really don't understand how people can continue to validate what the harassers did.
Oh wait, I do understand it, except that the only explanation is that the people that are validating are in fact bigots themselves.
Oh, please. MS' policy is there because they don't want you offending the sanctimonious family-friendly people. And protecting someone from harassment by hiding who they are doesn't fix the problem, which is not that she's a lesbian, but that XBox Live users (and people in general) are intolerant of difference. MS in fact has made things worse -- by banning the victim of harassment, they've validated the harassers.
Being intolerant of everyone isn't the same as being intolerant of difference.
I've said before, I'll say again: the internet is full of people who will give you shit not because they care but because they can.
Bigotry and prejudice implies direction. As far as I can tell, the only necessary prerequisite for harassment from the X-Box Live community is being alive and even that isn't too exclusive.

What better way to combat harassment and name-calling than by joining in the fun of making ignorant statements about groups of people?
How's pissing on the fire going? Put anything out yet?

This is exactly why I turned off the spigot in my home that was pouring sewage into my house. Live is a putrid pile of asshattery. There's very little in life I dislike more than the stupidity of the people on Live and in random online matchmaking.

I'm not excusing repugnant behavior, I'm saying that I doubt the veracity of this persons claim and her intent. Everyone on Live knows how easy it is to block specific users and/or audio for all online competitors. If they were being offensive she could have very easily blocked them and they could never have followed her game-to-game.
When my son plays on Live he blocks all voice communications so he doesn't hear all the garbage, there's no reason this lady couldn't do the same unless her entire reason for putting "lesbian" on her profile and jumping onto Live was in the hopes of creating just this situation to get press.
To be clear, I'm quite liberal and strongly support gay rights (marriage/adoption/partner benefits/etc.), but that doesn't mean I'm so naive as to not recognize that there is a militant element in the gay/lesbian movement which seeks to create situations just like this to raise the profile of their cause. The facts of this situation point very clearly towards someone trying to engineer a situation for a cause and not because they just innocently wanted to play games online. There are enough serious issues of discrimination that people don't have to aggressively bring it on themselves.
