Video Game Systems from the 1983 Sears Wishbook

The Retroist has a neat little article about the video game systems found in the 1983 Sears Wishbook, complete with lovely scans of the pertinent game systems.

Quote:
1983 was the year of the video game crash and that year’s Sears Wishbook was chock full of the detritus of a bloated dying industry. You got the handhelds, Vectrex, Gemini, Colecovision, Intellivision, Odyssey 2, Atari 2600 and Atari 5200 in this issue. Along with some great games and accessories.
Thanks Offworld!

I still have a Vectrex in my basement sitting on my bar.

I had the Sears version of the Atari 2600 when I was a child. My mother used to take my brother and I to Sears, paper route money in hand, to go game shopping every few weeks.

One of my favorite games back then was Coleco's Electronic Quarterback.

I wasn't going to be born for another 2 years!

The last panel, with the picture of Donkey Kong, reminds me of the documentary I watched the other day entitled: "King of Kong; A fistful of quarters". If anyone hasn't already rented it on netflix (you can stream it!!) I would recommend it

That was a really cool find. A lot of the games I used to have and it was just cool seeing the portable games too (The Ms. Pac-Man and Donkey Kong ones). IIRC I had the Galaga one.

Hmmmmmm, I know what we will be doing today. We are socked in with snow, but a fist full of quarters takes us back to the Kong days.

And you weren't even going to be BORN for 2 years? NEWBIE!!!

NEWBIEEEEEEEE!!

I was in my last year of university, and was just starting a software company. I didn't have time for games then, but I did miss playing.

I was masturbating to MTV (back when there were videos worth doing it to) and C64 Strip Poker that year. But I do remember going through that catalog and wishing I could have a Vectrex. I now have 2 on the shelf behind me and play the working one at least twice a week.

I still had five months of brewing left before I was unleashed upon this world when some of the folks here were drooling over that catalog...or masturbating to Strip Poker.
