With any good game, comes the good game Pirates. CGV has posted a generic reply from Microsoft following the news that leaked ISO's of both the PC and Xbox 360 version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 are hitting torrent sites.
Quote:
"Our commitment to combating piracy and support safer and more secure gameplay for the more than 20 million members of our Xbox Live community remains a top priority," said MS when we contacted it regarding the leak.
"All consumers should know that piracy is illegal and that modifying their Xbox 360 console to play pirated discs violates the Xbox Live terms of use, will void their warranty and result in a ban from Xbox Live. The health of the video game business depends on customers paying for the genuine products and services they receive from manufacturers, retailers, and the third parties that support them," added MS.
"We take vigorous action against illegal activity related to our products and services, but we do not comment on those details. Consumers should be aware that piracy is illegal and that modifying their Xbox 360 to play pirated games will void their warranty."
Pirates make me sick, but the DRM and copy protection put in place to "stop" them is even worse. I mean pretty much every single player game on PC has been cracked, most multiplayer ones have too. Its crazy to think any level of protection will stop the crackers.
I bought Dragon Age: Origins digital deluxe version and can't play it because of a stupid activation/registration problem yet I know of people playing it for 3+ days now who pirated it, how does that make sense.
Sorry for venting.

You know, i was thinking the exact same thing last night trying to activate all the stuff in Dragon Age. I am sitting here struggling to install stuff instead of playing the game.. while pirates already have the game and all its DLC installed. If only the day would come where legit players are not punished for buying the game.
It doesn't work. I'm as anti-piracy as anyone can be (as in, I don't pirate, and I jump all over those who admit to it), but it just doesn't work. Pirates will find a way, regardless, while legitimate owners are penalized.
Here's an example of how DRM penalizes legal users...just the other day, I got my order of Spellforce Universe in the mail. It utilizes cd keys (a DRM measure), and included two 5x5 keys. Well...the second of the two included games requires a 5x8 key! They included the wrong key! I went online and found out the publisher has basically ignored people's please for help, so I just bought a shiny coaster for my coffee cup.
My solution? I went online and grabbed a cd key off the net so I could play my legally purchased game. Now it works, with my illicit cd key. If I can figure out how to do that, ANYONE can.
I do not buy games with DRM, that is asking for it to be pirated. However, steam is an exception, and I stopped buying PC games until it is on steam and has no other DRM on it. However I have run into a new problem. DLC, It drives me up the wall to buy a game, just to have a lot of DLC come out, and then eventually a GOLD edition is released of the game that is cheaper and has all the DLC included(I am looking at you fallout 3). So I am torn, buy the game now, but get screwed later, or wait until the gold edition with everything comes out (but it lowers sales on the original launch day). What to do, what to do.
"Well they didn't include dedicated servers or mod support, so it's not worth paying for. I'm even "putting it to the man" by stealing his game for not including those features!!!"
As always, my recommendation: if you have some reason not to pay for a game, have the balls not to play it either.

STUPID BUNCH OF CRAP!
Ah, spellforce screws another customer. Here is my story, this is when the spellforce platinum disk came out. I had to order it online, when I got it, it would NOT install. Kept giving me this weird error, I had to digg around online till I found the problem, aparently there was a DRM bug, that misread a MICROSOFT file as something that should not be there. So the DRM prevented you from installing the game. To fix this, you had to go online and download a patch (that you had to dig around and find) install it on your system before you could run the disk. What a pain, this is one of the reasons why piracy is so popular. It is better than the legit stuff.

In no way do I advocate piracy, but lets be real here... if a developer is ignorning a big section of the community wouldn't the ultimate F.U. be to steal their game and play it anyway?
That seems much more insulting than not playing it.
I would never do this (and I can't really do it since I'll be playing MW2 on the Xbox 360 and I don't cotton to the idea of getting my account banned) and I doubt most of our readers would do it... but...

Yeah... I bought my DA:O off Impulse, but Steam, D2D, and even EA store buyers are having the same issue. The whole thing sucks. As if it all wasn't bad enough EA hasn't responded or acknowledged the issue. DA:O also requires you have a EA Account, Dragon Age Account, and Bioware Social Account. Seriously I need 3 accounts (in additional to my steam, impulse, etc account) to play 1 game. The problem appears to be that if you register online at Bioware Social site the EA Account you use to logon to the game doesn't recognize the registered game on your bioware account. Total crap.

That whole third paragraph pretty much paraphrases the second one.
Ok ok, piracy is bad and you'll get punished if caught doing it.
Why did it take a small essay to sum that up?
I could give a fuck less about the people playing the pirated version of the game.
What pisses me off more are the fuckers playing the genuine game but use shit like modded controllers.
Ban those fuckers.
Not saying piracy is any less of a threat, but still, even if you get the retail game, and cheat like hell in it, then what's the difference?
You got a guy who really wants the game, and "downloads" it and plays it.
Maybe he'll go buy the retail version when it comes out, since IW decided not to do a demo...
But the little asshat with a modded controller, well shit, he'll keep winning and winning...

I first learned about this while watching an interview with Infinity Ward at Giant Bomb. Evidently they have fixes for this in the new game but they aren't mentioning them specifically in order to not educate the cheaters.
Modded controller, what difference would that have, and why would that be cheating? Are we talking special mouse and keyboard, or are we talking jacking around with the bitstream-controller? I can't see how having a special controller is cheating...?
Also..not sure why people bother arguing with teecakes... I sincerely believe now that he is a bot built by Sony and unleashed on small community sites.

No. The ultimate FU would be to say absolutely nothing positive about the game or the publisher ever again and never buy anything from them ever again. Whether you actually play it or not is irrelevant.
If you did play it, you'd have to remember to never say anything good about it. Lest the word of mouth lead other poor souls into dumping their money down that hole.

I'll assume you haven't played console COD4 or COD5 then. There are a number of weapons that require a pull of the trigger to fire each round- the modded controllers have a button that turns this action into rapid fire, practically making the weapon shoot as fast as the software allows and making a semi-automatic rifle (which already compensates for its slow firing rate with high damage) into an automatic. While perhaps not conforming to the strictest definitions of cheating, it certainly is an exploit of insufficient software restrictions on the firing rate.
Quite common in multiplayer matches of World at War where there are a number of semi-auto rifles, and quite easy to spot. I can shoot many of them very fast, in small bursts at least, but no where near as fast as the modders. And as far as I know, there is no sanctioned controller with this "turbo" style button on the market, most people are just hacking up their regular ones.
All could be easily resolved with a cap on firing rate to something a human is capable of, but they never patched it. I assume that's the fix for MW2.

This account crazy stuff is why I never played a single Street Fighter IV match online because I couldn't make a GFWL account. And there is no support for the country I reside in.
This is definite, I will BUY Dragon Age AND crack it, so I can skip this whole account bullshit. It's not like I'm wasting any multiplayer features.

I got my Spellforce from GOG. I love GOG. They don't treat you like an infant. Games are not copy protected, but I have yet to see one on a torrent site.
I will make the argument that the DRM used in Mirror's Edge (internet connection required to activate and installation of securom files) reduced the value of that game. I noticed it hit the $19.99 and below price point quick.
If I had to choose between the two I would have chosen the pirated version. It's a shame because the game is so darn high quality. DICE = A+++ developer. I did a clean install of Win 7 and I'm hesitant to install this game because I don't want securom on my system. If I wanted to play it really badly I would have no choice but to go the illegitimate route...
