CNET is reporting the video games industry is doing quite well in Japan, despite the slumping economy.
Quote:
In a recent newsletter, Gerhard Fasol, head of Eurotechnology Japan, points out that the Japanese games sector is booming--with the combined net annual income of Japan's top nine game companies overtaking the combined net income of Japan's top 19 electrical giants.
Game companies such as Nintendo are thriving through the global recession while stalwarts such as Panasonic and Sony struggle (Sony's diversification and PlayStation sales haven't helped recently) with huge corporate hierarchies and a dearth of new "must have" products.
What's interesting about the growth of Japanese game play is that it's mainly on consoles and handhelds (with the Nintendo DSi blurring the line), whereas in the U.S. the growth is on mobile devices and online.
This speaks more to the low profits of Japanese hardware developers. They live in a country with a growing economy so they must pay workers more to create Sony and Panasonic hardware. Meanwhile, other Chinese countries with cheaper labor are undercutting them with products of equal quality.
Basically, they are seeing what we saw with the US auto-industry. However, our auto-industry has been subsidized heavily by the government to keep it functioning despite huge losses.
People love capitalism as long as the government is there to support it. One of the great ironies if you watch Fox News is that today's quasi-Republican-puppets (not to be confused with true Republicans that still believe in the ideals of their party and are equally disugsted by Fox News propoganda) are absolutely okay with socialized support of US industry by the government giving billionaires additional billions and then hoping that they won't steal it but will use it to continue support of their industry, but they'll scream their bloody heads off if the government subsidized healthcare.
Huge tangent, but still on topic if you interpret this news post more broadly as a discussion of world economics.

You make excellent point, Bean. Anyone still in touch with their American values has to swear off both major parties at this time. They're both full of shit and are extremely damaging to the nation.
We need to make sure we don't RE-elect any of these bafoons.
