Left 4 Dead 2 Demo Available For XBL Gold Members, PC Users

Are you an XBL Gold member but haven't played L4D2 yet? Well now you can queue up the 2 GB demo from xbox.com and give it play through.

Quote:
The sequel to the best-selling and critically-acclaimed co-operative multiplayer smash from Valve®, Left 4 Dead™ 2 promises to become one of 2009's top-selling games and set a new benchmark for co-operative action games. Left 4 Dead 2 takes place at roughly the same time as the original, and leads four new “Survivors” through the southeastern United States -- from Savannah, Georgia to New Orleans’ French Quarter. The title adds melee combat, new monsters and weapons, the AI Director 2.0, and more to create a larger game than the original. Visit www.l4d.com for more information.
Thanks VG247 for the tip!

Update: You can grab it now for the PC as well through Steam. Servers are getting hammered right now though... you may want to wait a while.

It is really surprising to me personally (considering how much I loved the first one) how much I am not looking to play L4D2. I am really not sure why, and it certainly is not one of the ridiculous boycotts. I feel like the first one gave me a really fun experience that was unique but I couldn't get better. I feel like I kind of hit my peak of zombie killing proficiency and don't need any extra weapons or different looking chars or new maps. Maybe I will grab the demo to see if I feel otherwise but I think MW2 is going to demand my time instead of L4D2.

I have Xbox Live Gold, but I wanna play on the PC? I dunno if I now get the rights to play on steam before the publix release? Maybe? No? Well fine, see if I care.

I kind of had the opposite feeling. L4D was an incredibly great game, especially because I have a group that I -always- played with. But the lack of weapons, and general lack of variation in the game (I don't consider random placement of things to be "variation," you still play the game the same way) left me wanting MORE.

I played the demo, and went into it expecting "L4D reskinned," and was very pleasantly surprised. A lot of new weapons, a lot of the same charm and personality that made L4D good, a lot more variation not only in your weapon availability but even in the zombies you fight (not the SAME skin for all special infected).

In L4D, whenever you found weapons in the level, it was always the same set, no matter what. If you found the Level 2 shotgun, it was always accompanied by the AR and sniper. In L4D you might get an AK-47, a frying pan, and pistol. Or you might get a SCAR-L and a police shotgun. If there's an SMG, it may be the Uzi, or it may be the new MAC10. The extra choices makes the game that much more enjoyable.

Yeah I have seen all of that and it looks good and fun. However I feel that I have exhausted the whole "start at point A, get to point B, fight off horde and tanks, win" experience. I am certainly not saying they haven't improved the game and added new features. I am merely saying that what seemed to have burned me out of the first game is still present in the new edition.

Unfortunately I did not get many of my friends to purchase L4D so most of my play was with PUGs which inevitably sucks. A weak link in L4D was almost catastrophic.

I, too, am playing Borderlands, and enjoy the plethora of guns. If only every game could be so chocked full of weapons...

I'm there with you but I'm looking forward to having more tools to play with while playing versus. The game is much more stressful and fun when you know the other players are working together to stop you, imo.

I agree 100%. Versus really made the game. There was only a couple gripes I had about Versus.

1: The elevator/mixer glitch killed "No Mercy" which, when I played, was 50% of the Versus options as far campaigns were concerns. I haven't played since the patch to add the other 2 campaigns so I am not sure if it was fixed or if more glitches are present in the other campaigns etc.

2: I wish I could pick my infected (besides tank) instead of random generation. I think this would add a bit more strategy however it would also place more emphasis on balancing the "classes" to ensure that 4 Hunters (for example) wouldn't be overpowering. This is not a deal breaker or an honest gripe, just something I wish was present in the first one.

This is now also available for PC users:

Quote:
Nov 3, 2009 - Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced the availability of the Left 4 Dead 2 demo to all PC gamers and all Xbox LIVE Gold Members.

The Left 4 Dead 2 demo features gameplay taken from "The Parish" campaign, set in the New Orleans French Quarter. Playable by 1 to 4 players over local or Internet connections on both the Xbox 360 and PC (with two-player split screen available on the Xbox 360), the demo features all the new boss infected zombies and many of the new melee weapons included in the full product.

Coming exclusively to Xbox 360 and PC, L4D2 promises to set a new benchmark for co-operative action games and become one of 2009's marquee titles. Set for release on November 17, the title adds melee combat to enable deeper co-operative gameplay, with items such as a chainsaws, frying pans, axes, baseball bats, and more.

With the AI Director 2.0, L4D's dynamic gameplay is taken to the next level by giving the Director the ability to procedurally change weather effects, world objects, and pathways in addition to tailoring the enemy population, effects, and sounds to match the players' performance. The result is a unique game session custom fitted to provide a satisfying and uniquely challenging experience each time the game is played.

Adding new Survivors, boss zombies, weapons, and items, Left 4 Dead 2 offers a much larger game than the original, featuring more co-operative campaigns, more Versus campaigns, new Survival maps, and the new competitive game mode, Scavenge, all available at launch.

So I played it a little bit on the 360. The daytime atmosphere so far is definitely less scary. At least on the initial map. I like the selection of weapons. That is pretty cool. So far the vibe I get is that I am playing a new map for L4D. I will see if that opinion changes.

Demo clocks in at 3.6 gigs on PC, FYI. I was able to install it just fine, no server hammering here. If you get the unable to connect message, just change your download server until you find one that works.
