Asteroids to make Deep Impact on the Silver Screen
Universal has won the rights to produce a motion picture based on the classic video game, Asteroids.
Quote:
Astonishingly, not only is Asteroids being made into a movie, but there was an actual bidding war between four major studios for the rights. Universal Studios has emerged the winner.
As a result, Matthew Lopez is set to write the script and it will be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura. Lopez has written the screenplays for the recent Disney films Escape to Witch Mountain and Bedtime Stories, as well as for the upcoming The Sorcerer's Apprentice. Meanwhile, di Bonaventura's latest ventures include Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and the soon-to-be-released G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.
Grease The Video Game, Pac-Man The Movie.... it's all been done.
At least since there was no storyline in Asteroids, the story in the movie wont be completely different than the game. Im kind of interested in this honestly, since everyone's going to assume it will completely suck, what if it doesnt?
Really? I mean, I knew they were desperate for new ideas, but fuck. This is beyond depressing.
It's time to finish my epic sci-fi screenplay and shop it around. I saw Transformers last night, and if that is what passes for entertainment in this day and age, then I not only know I can do better, I am further buffed when I see movies like Transformers make 200 million dollars in their opening weekends. I'm even more encouraged when a smart movie like The Dark Knight makes the same amount of money, because it means not everyone is absolutely fucking retarded.
If the people who wrote Transformers can get paid for that drivel, I know I can make a living with my writing. I know I can do better, and I will.

Your optimism is refreshing, but try listing all of the *good* movies based on video games. As I've said before, history is not on the side of movies based on games, and I'd be fine if Hollywood abandoned the idea.

Why even go so far as to list anything? Asteroids. Come on! I mean, can anyone tell me the story of asteroids? Did it even have a story? If it did, can you POSSIBLY tell it longer than five minutes?

Eck! This Hollywood stench is rank!
EXT. SPACE - DAY
The camera pans slowly across a massive group of asteroids, moving deliberately toward the planet Earth.
A lone ship can be seen in the foreground.
The ship maneuvers around deftly, dodging between the massive rocks, and shooting at them with a dinky gun until they are in smaller, more manageable chunks. Then, those chunks are made into even smaller chunks, before disappearing entirely.

Credits roll.
I fear that was a summary fit for a king, well done! Unfortunately, not a screen
