Minors Can't Use Twitter on the Xbox 360

Major Nelson wanted to let everyone know that if you're a minor (below the age of 18) you won't be able to take advantage of any new Dashboard updates that are coming soon. No Twitter, no Facebook, no Last.FM. Why is this? Because the parental controls on the Xbox 360 don't support the apps. They're working on it, but when it hits later this month for everyone... no soup for you youngsters.

Quote:
As some of you might be aware, those under the age of 18 are not able to access Twitter, Facebook and Last.fm in our public preview. I want to you let you know that this will remain the case when it launches to the world soon. We made this decision because as it stands now, parents aren’t able to use Family Settings to customize which of these applications their children can access. In order to offer an age-appropriate environment for everyone, we decided to turn off these applications for those Gold members under the age of 18. As expected, this has been a hot topic with the preview users. We want to make sure everyone was aware, however, that the development team is working on an update that gives parents the choice of which social applications their children can access. This means that Xbox LIVE members between the ages of 13 and 17 will be able to use Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm as long as their parents approve. The team hope to roll this out several weeks after launch and I will update you on the exact date as it gets closer.

Good choice; parent-approved. When parental controls work with the features, turn them back on. Well done.

And no, I don't give a flying crap what someone under 18 thinks. When you pay for your own home, you'll set your own rules.

That's odd, but why are people's ages set to under 18 anyway? Surely kids simply lie about their age when setting up the account? Pretty sure I did when I was younger.

I doubt it. If they're paying for all of that, they're living on their own, in which case they're legally adults/emancipated.

When you pay the bills, you set the rules.

That's like saying "Well, son - since you bought that Hustler subscription with your own money, it's ok.".
There have been plenty of times that I've wished voice chat was disabled for minors, as well. On the flip side, listening to these little creeps has given me more reason to ground my daughter from dating until she's 25.

You can't use the services unless you're 18 so that doesn't matter.

I wonder how many raging hormone teens are tweeting "This is bullshit."
Or how many Fans on Facebook of a group called "This is bullshit."

Maybe there will be a new garage "group" (they're not bands anymore) whose name is "This is bullshit." With a hit song "This is bullshit." Off their first and only album "This is bullshit."
Posted on Last.fm of course...

It doesn't matter. You can get still get your fix of 12 year olds hurling racial insults at you by playing games on Xbox Live.

Kinda hard for minors to have a credit card before they turn 18, and all checking accounts would be co-signed by an adult. So... nobody's paying for XBL pre-18.

What about purchasing subscription cards from a retailer?

That raises the question if you have to be 18 or over to buy those cards. I doubt it...but I have been carded for a video game at Gamestop before.

The parental controls for the 360 as such a pain in the @$$.

They need an xbox live account (even for that there's a minimum age cause I couldn't register an account for my 4 year old).
Then you got to 'prove' that your account is a parent of the kids account, provide credit card information, etc, etc.

Then, on top of that, you need a live account PER PERSON. As if I'll pay $50/year for each of my children. It could have been implemented much simpler. Not surprising most parents don't even bother using the console's control. Granted, nothing beats actual parental control but what's the point of adding helping tools if they are difficult to use?

I doubt anyone would get carded for any of those time cards; one of my friends was pre-18 when WoW launched and that's how he took care of the monthly fee. He'd buy them frequently without a bit of hassle.

I figured as much. Hell you can even use a debit card as a credit card if it has Mastercard or Vista on it and those are easily obtainable pre-18.

Yeah, few people realize that Pwnophobia is a 12 year old girl, but the avatar kinda gives it away :P
