Computer And Videogames reviews the PlayTV product and DRM-free recording has remained unscathed.

Clever, that.
Any recorded footage is slapped in a Library menu, automatically tagged with the programme name and description. Hit X on it and PlayTV runs the recording. Again, nice and simple.
Or, brilliantly, you can export videos to your PS3's XMB menu as MPEG-4 video (despite rumours suggesting the feature had been removed). From there you can use it like a normal file - watch it on your PS3, put it on PC, transfer it to your PSP... whatever you like.
You can access PlayTV from your PSP via Remote Play, too, allowing you to watch live TV or stored videos through your portable. Handy if you find yourself near a Wifi spot in, say... India, and don't want to miss out on Corrie.
Its interesting how Sony hardware always seems at ends with Sony media... but glad this turned out DRM free
Because North American markets, including the United States, Canada, and Mexico will be using the ATSC digital standard (and the latter two are currently early in their digital transition), it is unlikely they will see the PlayTV device because of compatibility issues.
Kinda worthless here in Sweden as it only works with the free digital channels and we have very few of them. Most of the channels here needs a card and this product does not support cards.
Dunno about the US though. Do you have lots of free tv channels in the digital terrestrial net?
Great in the UK as most of the worthwhile channels are available on freeview. (Well film4 and the BBC are which is most of what I watch despite having cable)

I was wondering what the addon card slots on the back of my TV were. So are they basically like smart cards for a cable box?

I can't find the link, but there was a time when Sony BMG sued Sony's hardware division over what could be done withe media files. DRM free movie transfer via this thing doesn't seem like something the media arm would support.
