ATI and Valve cross-promote; free games

Valve and ATI have stepped up their partnership with some cross-promotion. Steam-style!Update: You don't get the ability to run Source mods with the HL2DM/Lost Coast package unless you find one *specifically* for HL2DM or Lost Coast. Which you won't.

I can see people getting annoyed with getting a Steam installer bundled with their drivers, but otherwise this is pretty damn good stuff!

I like the idea of auto updating video drivers, as long as I can choose to NOT have them auto update.
Some times you just don't want to mess with update to new drivers. Sad, but a lot of times the newer drivers introduce new problems.

Now if ATI would just fix the shadow bugs with their drivers.

I think the deal would be cooler if Radeon owners got like 10 bucks in Stream credit, or something. I already have Lost Coast and HL2: DM, and both pretty much suck.

VERY cool! I am now downloading Lost Coast and HL2eathmatch free!

Thanks for the heads up!

Edit: That "big grin" is what happened when I didn't put a space between the ':' and the 'D' and I find that amusing!

This is pretty cool, I love ATI cards and follow their technology updates regularly. Their purchase by AMD could result in some cool possibilities. Let me head on over and start DL'ing!

I snagged a 9800XT a good few months prior to HL2's release and was treated to a voucher for a free copy of Half-Life 2 upon release. Not only was I able to use said voucher to play HL2 on release day via Steam (no send in the voucher, wait 6 weeks for your free copy bull shit like other tie ins), but every time HL2 got delayed they kept giving me more and more free games over Steam just for having plugged in my voucher code - including but not limited to their entire back catalog and CS: Source (as well as the beta).

Valve really goes out of their way to make good on their product tie ins, so anyone looking to pick up an HD 2000 range ATI card might be in for some more free titles should that Ep. 2 package slip to next year.

Has anyone else noticed a sudden influx of newly-registered members who are all very enthusiastic about company X or Y's products?

I was expecting this sooner or later. Gabe has always said that his biggest annoyance about what Steam wasn't doing is not auto updating video drivers.

Yeah, I wish things were like it was back in 97 when no one was a fanboy of company X or Y's products.

I bought a 9600XT, which was also supposed to get the voucher. Got nothing instead. Thanks Gigabyte.

It's hard to complain about free games, but...

I know I'm going to be the lone voice of opposition here, but this sounds really bad. I really don't need or want Steam bundled in a driver update. In some circles this would be called malware, especially since you have to get the most recent updates to run the newest games.

Not sure how I feel about Steam being bundled with ATI's drivers, but it's a nice promo otherwise.

Besides it being better than any card, save the 8800GTX?

Complete with higher power consumption than any other card on the market.

I thought most reviews were saying it wasn't even better than the 8800GTS 640mb?
