Warning to anyone buying multiple PS3s for the house. We bought our 3rd one last Christmas and discovered that Sony recently reduced the number of consoles you can have activated on your PSN account from 5 to 2. They grandfathered anyone who already had more than 2 activated but new activations are limited to 2 per account.
For the record I think that is bullshit.
Relax, you can always swap consoles out of the 2 current ones if one breaks. It's unfortunate, but still a lot better than the 360's bullshit DRM implementation that slows the whole damn console down on the non-purchasing system and forces you to be online!
Wow, so much Sony/PS3 hate in this thread... making me stronger. :-) I'll fit right in. TBH you guys covered the negatives, so I'll throw some positives out there. I actually like how this thing looks. Where it looks "dusty" as someone said above, it's just matte. I think it's neat that Sony keeps shrinking their hardware throughout their consoles' lifespans. I don't like when they release better SKUs to fix inexcusable problems in earlier SKUs (see first PSP). And yes... this should cost less.

Seriously, that top loader, cheap HDPE-looking plastic grinding over cheap HDPE-looking plastic. Loaded with dust and grime-collecting grooves. And standing! It doesn't just look like my ionic breeze purifier, it looks like an unstable ionic breeze purifier. I mean, its really small--but that design makes the NES top loader look attractive.
I think its old school cool. Fuck you guys. And it will prolly run cooler and be more reliable than the first two. You will be thankful for this model in 10 years.

yeah like the PSOne (the white ugly slim original PS) everybody is thankful for that.
the disc mechanism is PS1 style but what if the cheap plastic cover broke? how can you run the games?

I don't see how this is possible. My release PS3 is still going strong and still has full BC. What I'm saying is that they're already incredibly reliable. Makes you sort of wonder why the rest of Sony's products are such crap. I'd buy this if it was cheap. I could use another BR player that also plays games for the occasional PS3 game I might play. Kid took my PS3 to college with him.
(unless I missed the joke and you're actually pretending to confuse the unreliable 360 with the reliable PS3. If so, haha).
My only guess with Sony going for top loading is that it will be less prone to mechanical failure than the slide loader. If this is going to be everyone's last PS3, might as well make it last forever.

PS3 slim slim looks absolutely horrible. The designers of the PS3, slim, slimslim have failed every time. On the other hand, it just makes me appreciate the old PS2 Slim design even more.
More importantly, Sony should have foregone the Slimslim and just went full throttle with the released of PS4. Enough PS3.

Eventually, they want to be able to drop the price of this thing to $149 then to $99.
Remember, the PS2 is still selling and still on store shelves because of the huge libraries of games people have built up. This is more of the same. They make a cheapo crappy version that costs almost nothing and a year after the PS4 comes out they can drop the price of the PS3 to $99.
I'm guessing this is a sign that the PS4 doesn't have backwards compatibility.

The expressions on the face of the reviewers as they go through the unboxing are priceless. They are literally disappointed at every turn, then try to make a good case of it at the end.
But for $99 Ill get one for my nephew and he can buy a ton of used games. Oh wait, its $300!
