So I haven't gotten Diablo 3 as I'm on a portable computer away from home for another few weeks, but I'm curious about how things are looking with the auction house finally launched.
My questions are such:
1) anyone have any idea just how much money you could expect to make if you played this in your free-time, in terms of $/hr? I'm not expecting some huge number. In fact, I'm guessing on the order of pennies or nickels per hour unless you have crazy luck. It leads into the next question though:
2) What are the odds of you finding and selling an item with enough value to pay for your game, or other games (like Starcraft 2.2)?
Again, I'm not expecting that anyone could make a good business model off this, at least not in the states (here's looking at China...) but is it something that you could even just think, "hmm, I'm bored. Lets go earn a couple (literally) bucks by playing Diablo for a few hours". I mean, it's always nice to get paid for what you enjoy in the first place.
As a point of interest, lets say you can expect an average of $0.10 cents an hour over the course of your play time. Ten hours of gameplay a week, especially on a game you enjoy, is not extravagant for many, so $1 a week. You play it for a year, game is paid for. Hell, looking at some of the prices now, you could get lucky with a single item and pay for the game 3 times over. I expect those prices to drop off soon though, so it might be worth getting in on the game now.
Prices are still stabilizing, so at this point it is still difficult to tell.
However, a friend of mine sold a mediocre item for $25.00 yesterday. Considering my preface above, you can take that however you like. Inferno grade gear is selling 80-250 (cap, i think) a piece.
Keep in mind that there are two options for selling. 1) "Blizzard Bucks" redeemable via their games, and in the RMAH. 2) PayPal - at a 15% cut rate. If you put some real time into, I would imagine that you could easily get your money back in a very short time.
considering that the minimum price to sell an item and still turn a profit is what, $1.50 or something, prices should eventually be common in the $10 range for decent stuff. what matters though is how many people are actually going to buy off it. i'm very interested in selling, as are several of my friends, but i've yet to meet anybody who's jazzed about being able to spend money on items.

I think that people don't want to talk about spending money on virtual items, but a lot of people still do it though..
Saw proof of someone who sold $1600 USD worth of items so far on mmochampion. Pretty crazy. So people are buying big ticket items. Either that or it was a really really good photoshop.
I'm amazed the government even allows this to go on. There's nothing stopping a terrorist organization using the cash shop to funnel money into other countries under the disguise it's two players on a game. Oh that's right they allow it because they are monitoring everything, at least so they say. If I decided to make a D3 toon tomorrow named "Alqadea" and sell random shit on the cash shop, it would flag everyone's account who bothered just to look at what I had.

lol they tried to do the same thing to Starbucks employees and garnish back tips before they started forcing employees to declare them. Still haven't seen one audit nor paid them a dime to this day.
