GameSpot has posted a hands-on preview of Sega's upcoming MMORPG, Phantasy Star Online 2.

Randomness plays a significant role in PSO2. While the geographic nature of the map stayed the same, enemy positions, level layouts and item drops were dynamically scattered, altered and distributed during our second and third run in the forest level. Furthermore, PSO2 introduces interrupt events to shake things up when you least expect them. These include crashed space ships or high-level groups of Darkers teleporting within the vicinity. Other times, the game can throw a type of interrupt event where you duel against a boss (usually a few levels higher than you), regardless of whether the current quest you're in contains a boss or not.
When will they release that they'd make a lot more money with a proper single player Phantasy Star reboot? This original was my first RPG.
Because Sega fucking hates us all.

Phantasy Star has no brand-power in the modern age. Look at the children LOOK AT THEM GODDAMN YOU! How many were alive the last time their was a major-release and new single player PS title? 1993! We're old, my friend. Sega has to try to follow the dollars in its current state, and the grown-up sperm from the last PS can now vote and drive so PSV may not be the best way to do so.

Excellent points, I just don't see why a single player PS can't coexist with MMO ones.
I would pay big money for a new PS single experience with similar character and story to PS1. Never played 2 and higher because 2 turned me off completely by downgrading the monster encounters to that lousy grid based background instead of actual scenery.
I can say I've never really played much of the single player Phantasy Star games. I've maybe tried about fifteen minutes or so as a kid at a friends house, but that was it.
I did however play the living fuck out of Phantasy Star Online, before they decided to put out Episode 2 and make it Pay-to-Play. I would sit around in living room after school and just play online for hours, talking to others using that old translation chat.
Was hoping that Phantasy Star Universe would have been something to get me back, but only played that for a little while. Didn't grab me in at all. I'm just hoping that PSO2 is at least something akin to the first one. That whole lobby starting area with people was nice. It drew you in quickly to others playing it and making it easy to get into a game. I just wish this can bring some of that same feeling back. If not, I'll only play this for an hour or two.
