I just upgraded to a single GTX680, and its plenty fast on my 30" at 2560x1600 and secondary 27" monitor.
A thousand bucks for a graphics card is nuts! But I'm willing to bet there will be various "special edition" versions that will run even more. Meh, I gave up caring about having the fastest *fill in the blank* years ago.
Less power, heat, space? I thought that was pretty obvious.
The 680s are already well regarded for not being power hog solar flares. If anything, this card is more likely to burn the house down, as evidenced by the need to reduce its clock speed. Space I will grant you--except as Emabulator said, no one is buying $1000 of video card and going cheap on the motherboard. Baffling.

The need to reduce the clock speed is somewhat superficial. It's still far less power than dual 680's in SLI. Likewise this card is doing the same thing that the 6990 did and allowing an absolutely massive voltage hike for overclocking.
