Nvidia has announced their next video card, the dual-GPU GTX 690. It will be released May 3rd and priced at $1000.

Nvidia warned us it was coming, but until very late last night we had no idea what they were talking about, or if we should even be excited. Would they announce lower end Kepler parts to fill out the midrange? Would they announce you could finally “buy” a GTX 680? Expectations were high when Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun took the stage for his keynote in Shanghai China, and my friends, meet the all new dual-GPU $999 GTX 690.
Triple monitor setup would be the only reason to get it, it will prob sell out anyway.
680s can already do triple monitor. Seriously, this appears to be two 680s glued together for the same price as two 680s. Am I missing the benefit of it?

The only benefit is Nvidia can claim they make the world's fastest video card. Dual 680s would be the way to go because they usually underclock the GPUs for cards like this.
I'd be more than happy with a single GTX 680.
Edit: Unless of course you want a $999 video card for your $99 non-SLI motherboard.
I've never been willing to shell out more than $500 for a vid card, and I have never had a problem running new games. Of course, I don't go for massive multimonitor setups, so that might be the difference.
Seeing as I've never spent more than $220 on a single video card in my life, the thought of dropping a grand on one just blows my mind. That's more than twice as much as I spent during my last PC upgrade cycle nearly three years ago. <boggle>

One of the screen shots is two of these cards in an SLI configuration. There's your benefit, as you would have to have room for 4 cards to do it otherwise (can you even SLI with 4 cards?)
This card (well, the 680's in general) is for the extreme hard-core gamer, so it's not for me. I'm perfectly happy with my lone 560ti as are all of my games.

Yes, you can 4-SLI. One of the big features of the 680 was how well it scaled when using multiple cards. The 680 scaling does reduce in benefit when you hit 4, though, so I wonder if the maximum scalability with the 690 will be hit with 2.
Please note I am not knocking this card--I just don't see a benefit to a card that is no better than two of the month-old version when it costs the same.

Less power, heat, space? I thought that was pretty obvious.
Still $1000 for a videcoard is complete and total fucking overkill.

\Like Emabulator, I'd be happy with one. Hell, if I can get a card to run the Witcher 2 and Battlefield 3 on Ultra, I'd be more than happy.
My $250 AMD 7850 that I bought a month ago runs Battlefield 3 on ultra at roughly 45~ FPS constant with 4x MSAA. It may not be 60fps but its damn good enough for me to keep AA on instead of that tiny bit of extra framerate. Battlefield 3 is a slower paced game than Bad Company 2 so I can deal with the minor hit in framerate loss for beauty.
