Cowen & Company believes Activision's Prototype 2 will "struggle" at retail, with analyst's predicting that the title could see under 500k sales. Gamasutra has the news.

A new report from analyst group Cowen and Company suggests that Activision's open-world action game Prototype 2, due for release next week, will "struggle" to reach 500,000 units sold in the U.S. in its first year.
Analyst Doug Creutz has reduced his previous estimate for Activision Blizzard's fiscal 2012 EPS from $1.05 to $1.01, stating that Prototype 2 is likely to see a "soft performance" when it launches, and will not sell as well as the original game.
He notes that neither the Xbox 360 or PS3 version of the game have broken into Amazon's top 100 selling games charts, which he says is "typically a bad sign for actual sales."
Doesn't surprise me. Theres been very little excitement about the game. People seem largely indifferent to Prototype 2; the first wasnt all that great and this one is releasing at generally a pretty bad time. Unless it reviews exceptionally well I cant see it doing too well.
I actually really liked the first one, and am looking forward to the sequel, but due to some recent money issues (mainly unexpected car repairs) I'm gonna have to wait for it to drop in price a bit.
Its not really a surprise, the first game wasn't all that good and really didn't need a sequel.
Yes, but... PLEASE BUY IT GUYS! I am heavily invested in ATVI stock thanks to Skylanders sell outs everywhere and Diablo III coming up... this doing well too would be icing on the cake for my portofolio!

Pretty please?
You did read the article, right? This is expected to cause a dip in ATVI's stock.

I played several hours of the 1st game and am completely uninterested in the sequel. If it reviews well I may check it out but even that is a long shot. I just think "InFamous" did this better.

This game was totally different from inFamous. Yeah, they were both open world "superhero" games, but each had very different play styles. The closest thing to Prototype was Hulk; Ultimate Destruction.

DOESN'T MATTER. Will be completely offset and then some by sold out Skylanders and Diablo III. ATVI will have gangbusters profits because of Diablo III and especially Skylanders!

My kids are getting Skylanders this summer. Are you able to use a used Skylander or do they have a unique code like DLC?

I could not finish the first one because AI constantly cheats and over-all feel of the game was not that great. Following the development of the first game, I really wanted to like it. Oh well, not going to give them money for this sequel.
Liked the first one ok, but then I never really wanted a follow-up.
I also feel a bit weird about seeing it "barely" get a predicted 500k and that being seen as a failure. I wish I could make a game that sold half a million copies!

If you can find a used Skylander all you have to do is reset it while in game and assign it to your kid/yourself. They do have codes packaged with them, but those are used for the PC online minigames and the iPod app, not the console games.
