Not sure if this game ever redeemed itself.

It didn't. They fixed the bugs, but the gameplay never lived up to what people expected from Stardock.
They're making a lot of changes in hopes of making the game what it should have been in the first place.

Except the gameplay and everything about this game was probably way better a few years ago when it was called the Age of Wonders series.

I would have preferred they made GalCiv III myself.
They are hell bent on trying to salvage this one. I don't think anyone outside of Stardock thinks it's a good idea.

Which was better when it was called Master of Magic?
Elemental was an awful game. They have made a lot of improvements with FE. Still not what I would expect from Stargate and the guy behind FFH2. It's decent at this point though.

They're giving this away for free (at least via their store) to anyone that bought the first...

Elemental at release was an amazing pile of garbage that needed another six months of development to reach mediocre status. It really was just dumbfoundingly terrible, even APB had more polish and playability.
Stardock has put a lot of effort into making things right, but it is hard to undo that kind of damage. They would have had better luck stealing Master of Magic wholesale and then adding a coat of paint and some mechanics changes.

I hated GalCiv II. Absolutely hated it. A game where absolutely nothing was fun. And the interface was awful.
Between FE and 'Warlock: Master of the Arcane' we'll have two 'Civ 5' fantasy clones to pick from.
'Warlock' looks like a straight-off Civ 5 clone, right down to the hexes and interface.
It will be interesting to see if either of these games are any fun.
