Leisure Suit Larry Comes to Kickstarter, Al Lowe Involved
Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards is the latest in a line of old games hoping to get a Kickstarter revival. Unlike the last few Larry games, this one has series creator Al Lowe involved in the development.

So why are we jumping on the Kickstarter bandwagon with LEISURE SUIT LARRY IN THE LAND OF THE LOUNGE LIZARDS?
It’s simple. We love Larry…Larry Laffer. We were there when he was born, in 1987. We were there for his last adventure, LOVE FOR SAIL, almost exactly 10 years later.
And we’ve long wished for a version that would combine the characters and game play we already love with:
The freedom to play on mobile devices
A modern point-and-click/touchscreen interface
Updated, ultra-high res graphics
Fully voiced characters
Even more of the humor that’s made Al Lowe a household name…like “Borders” and “Enron”!
So we’re making it. From scratch. And we want YOUR help.
$75 to get into the beta? It is beyond me why they do that. I would think they would want MORE people in the beta, not less. Not that that would help anyway. Last time I checked software testing was a paid job, not an award. Game Software is about the only software where you can actually get people to pay YOU to test it (poorly). This is probably why games are so full of bugs when they ship.

While the video is great and I support it, I can't help but feel that leading with a remake was the wrong way to go. If this had been Leisure Suit Larry 8, itd prbably break 500,000 in 3 days, but people aren't going to be anywhere near as excited about a HD update.

Have to agree. Especially considering it was remade already when Sierra did their VGA remakes.
Also, not a fan of the pricing tiers. $100 for the game and box when Wasteland 2 is doing it for $50? Even at the $100 Double Fine threw in a lot more than that.

Love Al Lowe, love Leisure Suit Larry. I will contribute to this because I think this kind of content is sorely missed in gaming.
HOWEVER now for the negative side. First here is why I don't think Leisure Suit Larry is a game that will capture a new audience. And let's be honest, if you're trying to restart this franchise you should want to build an audience not just intrigue those looking for a nostalgia fix. LL was a game that appealed to 14 year old boys. Why? Because it was as close to porn as most of us could get. 14 year old boys today have unlimited porn. When I played LL as a kid, the biggest draw was feeling like I was being exposed to debauchery. Even if LL goes real coarse and pornographic , teenagers won't be impressed.
I knew this Kickstarter shit was a really bad idea. Gamers are all buying into this shit, but then everyone and their brother is coming out and saying, "Hey idiots, gimme your money so I can make a game and then have you gimme your money again.". Or at the very least they are gambling on their donations possibly even giving them more money than they need and then they get to sell it for bonus money. I think it's pretty stupid. You wanna make a game, build a case and get investors.

The reason for many of these Kickstarter projects is because they cant find investors. In the case of Wasteland 2, Brian Fargo had been shopping the idea to publishers for years without success. It wasn't until Kickstarter that he was able to get the support to make the game.

Right. And if you're not on-board with the idea, you don't have to invest. The people who want to play it, invest. And in the three Kickstarters so far from 'major' names (not sure if we can include Banner Saga here), each time you donate, you actually get the game upon completion.
So. The people who want it, fund it then get it.
Not sure what the problem is.

Yes and No. Isn't Fallout 3 pretty much the same thing as Wasteland 2? It wasn't the idea publishers didn't want -- it was Fargo's version of the idea.

Of COURSE we can include Banner Saga! The people behind it are vets, many coming straight from the Star Wars Old Republic MMO.

That's what I mean, according to him none of the publishers wanted to fund an old school turn based RPG because they thought there was no market for it.

You get a copy of the game with the lowest tier donation, so in effect you're just pre-ordering the game.

Exactly. And given they've hit their goal and gone well over, clearly there's some market for it and they'll definitely be getting my money.

I don't think there is a market for an old-school turn-based RPG. Not enough for some publisher to fund and market the game. On its own, direct to fans it can obviously survive. But, in a global market with millions in marketing? Not so sure about that.
