"Elliptic Labs will reveal their Touchless Gesture User Interface technology at CES 2011. Elliptic Labs sprung forth from the signal processing environment at the University of Oslo and what they've come up with is an iPod dock which creates a 'touchless zone' that extends out about 1 foot in front and to the sides of the iPad screen. Users can then initiate a number of gestures, much like on Microsoft Kinect, to manipulate onscreen content."
Well that didn't take long. Thank god I don't need a 360 now.
Talk about adding an unnecessary input method to a device that is trumpeted as the wonder of all touch interfaces. Something about "keeping up with the joneses" comes to mind..
He didn't say they developed it. This "tech" seems to be iPad (apple) exclusive. That is what pippy was referring too.

As an example, users can swipe their hands in the air to scroll threw icons or various pages on an app. Another supported gesture is the ability to start and stop a song from playing by pushing one’s hand towards the iPad.
THIS is the real 32x in the making. Why? They are adding a piece of equipment to a smaller device that was suppose to be portable. But who knows those iPeople buy ANYTHING that is shiny and white.

I assumed they would just use one of the cameras. But it needs a dock. I agree that this interface seems pointless for the iPwhatevers, but requiring a dock is even worse.

It's only "exclusive" in the sense that the developers haven't written support for anything else yet. It's no more "exclusive" than the original controller app for that remote quadracopter was.
You can bet your ass that if Apple was itself involved in this particular project in any real way, there would be NDAs so thick no-one could so much as confirm the name or existence of the project, let alone run a press demo.

Again, it has nothing to do with Apple beyond the fact that they have a good SDK and dock connector support in the API. It's clearly a research project into the touchless gesture tech, so what makes more sense: writing a touch-based UI on top of a desktop OS and then starting your real research? Or taking an existing touch-based UI with a good API and building your research on top of that?

iPhone that is all.

What kind of an idiot needs a touchless interface for a device with a touch screen? This is an example of the blind leading the stupid.
Again, stop for a second and put yourself in this research group's shoes. Why spend months trying to get workable linux/windows touch layer going before even starting your own research, when you can get an iPad and SDK for $600? (If Android had USB Host mode it'd probably be on Android too)
Plus, the press are idiots and can be depended upon to latch onto anything remotely related to Apple.

THIS.
I'm tired of seeing worthless things being shown all over the press just because it was done/developed for iShits. Even when the EXACT SAME THING exists for something else.
I hate iFanboys.

I find it interesting that a news thread about a 3rd party product turns to Apple "hate" replies.
But why all this hate ? Is it because their products are overpriced ?
overhyped ?
unreliable ?
because of the consumer base ?
something else maybe ?
Does this "hate" applies to apple software as well or only towards their consumer products ? Do you for example "hate" Final Cut Studio ? Logic Studio ?
maybe itunes/quicktime ?
Do you "hate" other companies as well ? Is there a company you "love" ?
