I believe his criticism was that they were somehow preventing kids from learning the guitar, even tho I'd bet there was an upswing in instrument purchases. Given that the whole point of Power Gig is that it teaches you how to play guitar while you play the game, it's probably right in line with what he thinks instrument-based rhythm games should be.
