God dammit people. This is less about piracy and more about installing your collection of bluray games internally for easy access and improved load times. It seems no one realizes that you still need legitimate game discs to install. You cant YET install downloaded isos. This really isnt piracy in the sense that other consoles were pirated. I'm ganna buy a PS3Key just for the aforementioned features. There's really not many games I'd pirate if I wanted to. I own the games I like.
Don't trivialize the impact this could have just from the used and return policy Gamestop has, or rental services such as Gamefly/Blockbuster. Simply walk in, get your game, and return it for your money back/return at end of $6 rental period.

That is the justification people who pirate are using "Games are costing me more for less gameplay/gametime, so why not pirate?".

Same reason people skydive, climb mountains, or various other "What are they thinking?!?!" activites. For the challenge usually. Tell me I can't do something and I am probably going to do my best to prove you wrong. Read This book, if you want to see the principle at work.

There's a very real chance that this exploit may not have been found, never mind publicized, had Sony not removed the linux OS option from the system.
The minds of those with the time and resources to find this kind of workaround are usually those in academia, and they are the ones that were hit worst by Sony's decision.
Aww, irony, you serve us well.

- Clearly you can't go online with this. People who pirate 360 games know this fact well.

Well, future updates probably *will* fix the issue, but those using the device would be a little bit silly to a) Be online using it and b) install an update without seeing if it spoils their party.
From what I understand, the hack exploits a weakness in the USB stack Sony use, and so they can probably 'fix' the problem easily, but will have a heck of a lot of QC time to make sure no legitimate devices are affected.
