Last night, the unnecessary Street Fighter IV was released for Apple's iPhone. It's $9.99 for those who want to be the guinea pigs. For those that just want to read some impressions of it, Shacknews has got you covered:
Quote:
The game features 8 fighters: Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Guile, Blanka, Dhalsim, Abel, and M. Bison. The fighters can be used for head-to-head multiplayer over Bluetooth or for solo play modes including Dojo mode, which challenges the player to complete increasingly difficult trials while teaching the basics of the port.
I was as skeptic as anyone else, but I'm happy to report that this is faithful port of the full-sized game, minus the characters and modes. Yes, complex combos and moves can be pulled off after a bit of practice. After about 15 minutes, I was able to execute Ryu's signature combo from Street Fighter IV: the shoryuken focus attack dash cancel into his ultra combo.
They've moved a bunch of the more complex motions to single button presses. For example, quoting from the ShackNews link:
Quote:
Ultra and Super combos can be executed simply by tapping on the meter icon on screen.
Either way though, seems like it could be a lot of fun. Too bad they don't have a trial version...I would love to give it a try to see if the controls are as good as this guy says they are.
Ars praised the graphics but was less positive about the controls. "I was able to pull off the dragon punches and fireballs after a while, but the game never felt good to me." -- http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/20...m_campaign=rss
I was playing SF 3 Alpha MAX on the PSP recently and it has a similar feature where you can map specials and combos to single button presses. After playing with an arcade stick it just never felt right to me. One positive though was I stopped having to worry about getting the controls and could focus more on range of attacks and strategy. Maybe that is what it is like if you are good at SF.
