And this movie may go down as one major reason why you should hire a writer instead of allowing the director to write his own movie.
This isnt a defense of the movie as it is directors writing their own movies, but there are tons of reasons that wouldn't support this argument even if Avatar does flop.
Most of my favorite directors also write their own movies (Cameron is not one of them) and have been very successful doing so. I don't think Cameron is going to ruin it for them, or even himself, just because his movie might not do as well as the hype is trying to make people think.
Some directors should stop writing, though. I'm looking at YOU M. Night.
Yeah, but there's a dirty secret about directors writing their own movies, which is that they often hire professional writers to help them, and then take top billing anyway on writing credits. I don't get the feeling that that's what's happened with Avatar. This is truly Cameron's baby.
Besides, writing a good script is a whole lot more complex and difficult to do well than most people realize. Good directors are masters of turning written scenes into visual scenes. That doesn't connote ability to create good scenes in the first place :P
I liked Waterworld and The Postman. I think I have a Costner man-crush.
Costner is like the poor-man's Mel Gibson :P
Actually I liked Waterworld too, even if the premise is completely silly and impossible. But, have you ever seen the extended version? This would be the version where they put back in all the scenes they cut to make it somewhat marketable. When this is done, the movie is fantastic. Suddenly things start making sense, all sorts of character development slots into place. I was stunned when I saw it.
Doesn't matter if it's bad. The furries will still eat it right up.
- Haha, I can just see people standing in line with goddamn blue face makeup, and whiskers painted on their face, cheering like the old ladies for Twilight ;P
