Regarding the change of kids movies, they really have gotten to be pretty sterilized since my childhood. There were a number of kids movies where kids said "shit" or "god damn" back in the 80's. Can you imagine the outcry if that happened now?
You remember the original Transformers movie, not the bay one, "shit" and "damn" were both used.
Not to mention all of the deaths. As a kid I don't remember giving two shits about characters being killed off, but when I rewatched it a few years back I realized just how gruesome it was.

Yup. That was actually one of the movies I was thinking of.
I remember loving the fact that their battles felt more realistic because you didn't know who would get killed next. Characters getting killed in battles is probably actually a good thing because it teaches kids that there are consequences to violence even if it is sometimes necessary.

Do you remember the original Bad News Bears? It had swearing kids, and one of them even made derogatory comments about minorities and Jews. One of the main kid characters (Jackie Earl Haley) was also shown smoking a few times, and at the end of the movie all the kids are drinking beer.
