Lets face it, tons of people don't own PSPs... so the adhoc multiplayer modes in PSP games can be a bit useless. With adhoc modes, you need to be in close physical proximity to someone who not only owns a PSP, but also owns the game you want to play. Now though, Sony is poised to release an application called adhocParty which will allow you to utilize your PS3 as kind of a network relay, letting you play PSP games in adhoc mode at great distances. Sure now you also need a PS3 in the mix, but at least the pool of players will be greatly increased. PlayStation Blog:

So, how does adhocParty work? PSP titles with adhoc mode traditionally require you to play within close proximity to each other. AdhocParty takes advantage of the interoperable capabilities of the PSP and PS3 systems. It enables you to play games featuring Ad Hoc mode, such as Gran Turismo and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, over the Internet through the PS3. Your PSP connects to the PS3 via Wi-Fi, allowing you to chat online with fellow gamers in North America before jumping into competition from the comforts of each of your respective living rooms.
In addition to all of its competitive and social gaming features, adhocParty for PSP supports voice chat through the Wireless Headset of PlayStation Eye, offering you a complete and immersive gaming experience only available on the PlayStation platform.
Pretty neat idea, glad to see some forward thinking going on.
I don't get it.
I suppose it's neat that you can use a PS3 as a router for your PSP. But can't you just play over any wifi connection?
The PSP supports two modes. Infrastructure which is online via wifi, and then ad hoc, which is wi fi with some dude sitting next to you. The vast majority support ad hoc, not infrastructure. Since sitting next to someone and playing is not as big in the US as it is in Japan, I rarely play with people. With this game, all my ad hoc games, which are most of them, can now be played online with my friends, plus with voice chat.

Ahhh, I get it now. Infrastructure requires the publisher to roll their own matchmaking service, so they don't (often) do it. But with this change you can do 'ad hoc' by piggy-backing off your PS3 friends-list to effectively do the matchmaking (transparently to the app).
That's actually a pretty neat hack. (and explains why you need the PS3, rather than just a wifi connection)
It's a shame net play itself isn't well supported by the publishers. But I guess that's more the rule than the exception in handheld gaming.
It also might be an issue with processing power. The creators of Little Big Planet for the PSP said that the multiplayer used about a third of the PSPs power at any given time leaving only about 2/3s for the graphics, physics, etc. So they dropped it in the interest of not having to neuter the game. This could be an issue with lots of games unless you do some really good programming such as only rendering what can be seen, etc. Then again I am not sure if the PSP can even do stuff like that well.
But then again the new Socom supports infrastructure for competitive and co op and looks pretty good.

What the fuck took them so long?! Japan has had this for almost a year now. I thought for sure they would release this in the US around the time when Monster Hunter Unite came out, but nope, they wait till now. Still late is better than never I guess.
Socom was awesome on the PSP. Voice chat, 16player multiplayer, etc. It handled it great. Don't get why others can't, aside from the server issue. I kinda wanna play right now.
I've been using the Japanese version for a few months now. It works pretty well. The only issue I have with it is that you have to have your PS3 hardwired for the network connection. I think it has trouble communicating with the PSP if you are trying to use the wireless.
