Catlevania OOE is fantastic. I completed it in about 10 hours at 92%. The challenging difficulty adds depth. You now have to form strategies and combos to take down enemies and bosses. Fortunately, it's easy to switch between weapons. Anyway, don't let all the other great titles over shadow this one.

I like a challenging game, but I hear this one goes from challenging to annoyingly frustrating. Are the boss fights as ridiculously hard as the reviews make them out to be?

The difficulty is relative to your capacity for playing strategically. If you run into a boss and try to kill it with sheer speed and force, you will not fare very well.
Each boss has a "pattern," and learning said patterns greatly improve your chances of winning.
While the game is difficult, I don't find it to be the slightest bit frustrating.

Arg, I wasn't going to pick this one up, but I can't deny my love for Castlevania. And from what I've read, it sounds like they changed the combat up enough that it will be interesting to rediscover how to play with a different set of options.
Ok now I officially want to get into the Castlevania series.
I posted a thread a while ago asking which ones to play in order.
It's really impressive to see that in 10 hours you reached 92% of the game. I prefer games that don't take 30+ hours to finish simply because I am quite short on gaming time.
The second half of the game was a nice surprise, I guess I should've expected it but I didn't. It was also pretty cool that the "last" area actually has a secret exit that leads to two new areas.
I haven't beaten it yet but I've played enough now that I think it's the best Castlevania game on the DS with some exceptions, mainly the smaller inventory and worse music than the previous two games.

I took down most bosses on the second or third try. I found two bosses really difficult. It took me about 10 attempts to take down the crab tower boss toward the start of the game. He has a tough pattern and is difficult to attack. The final boss is also difficult. His first form is simple, but then his second form is deadly. Sadly, you have to restart at his first form each time you die.
I enjoyed the boss fights. I found the challenge they provided fun. Also, they were some of the more creative Castlevania bosses.
Been loving this so far. The last castlevania I picked up was portrait of ruin which was still riding the metroidvania forumulae and this new game has completely revamped things in a great way.
The villager unlocking bit is great, and the new world map idea is great too.
The background art and animations are completely stunning. Everything animates so smoothly and they are all polished to the nth degree, so shatering a skeleton or those exploding jelly fish creatures is always satisfying.
I have died repeatedly on pretty much every boss fight but the first one, but you're forced here to figure out both the movement patterns and the weapons that work against them. I also like that the game really supports having multiple weapon types and play styles.
but the best change is tying all weapons to one very fast recharging mp bar, so now you can actually use the knife throwing as much as you want, where in previous games you never seemed to get enough hearts to use any of your special attacks on a regular basis.

Yeah, definitely. The ability to have what used to be the old specials + magical attacks at your near constant disposal goes far to making Shanoa feel like a force of destruction to play as, more than any past characters.

At the end of the game I was shooting out dual laser beams from my hands and flying around on a pair of black, magical wings. I felt like such an incredible badass. Even moreso than the Crissaegram or using any variation of "Black Panther" from a previous game.
for all the keveching about how hard it was, I was able to kill both Death and Dracula without getting hit, my first time fighting them... with my particular set of items equiped that raised my stats and attack power so high, I was able to do 2k of damage a swat. I've also been a CaslteVania nut since 1987, before most of you whippersnappers were born.

Okay, I just bought this game used after all the high praise it got when it was new. For about two years it's been in my "need to buy a DS so I can play Castlevania" file because I am a HUGE Castlevania fan since the first game.
What the crap is everyone smoking? THis game, so far, is AWFUL. I have no problem wiht it being hard. Every single one of the original games was hard. But this game is just awful.
I think the most frustrating thing about it is that it wraps itself in the guise of telling a story, and yet there is absolutely NO story. And I don't mean no story like Super Mario Bros. has no story. Even that game had some sort of narrative transition from one area to the next. No, this game has levels that are compelete non sequiters to one another. I, for instance, just finished the level "misty forest road" and am now in the level "skeleton Cave". WHY am I in a skeleton Cave? Who knows! How did I get there? Well, I guess by the road, but I had no idea I was going there when I was on it. And it's not like I'm going in a line towards something.. or AWAY from something. No, on the overworld map I'm just kind of meandering around hitting random spots that seem to be infested with monsters for absolutely no reason.
I'm going to keep playing because I bought it and I love castlevania. But I am not having any fun.
It LOOKS good. It SOUNDS good. It's just not Castlevania and it's not any fun.
