Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2 Coming to Wii Virtual Console
Silicon Era has word that the original Metal Gear is making its way to the Nintendo Wii in Virtual Console form. This is the MSX version, and not the NES version... and other Konami MSX titles will also be coming in the next several months:
Quote:
Metal Gear
Yie-Ar Kung Fu: Counterattack of the Emperor
Space Manbo
Penguin Adventure
Road Fighter
Parodius
Contra
Gradius 2
Salamander
Quarth
Knightmare
Gofer no Yabou: Episode 2
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake
Not sure what the differences are in the MSX and NES versions... I only played the NES ones.
When you people buy Metal Gear 1 and 2 and realize that you love them you can then graduate and pick up Metal Gear Solid, Solid 2 and 3 and REPLAY them with us!
The difference between the NES version of Metal Gear and the MSX version of Metal Gear:
MSX version=sublime
NES version=steaming pile of shit.
Kojima even hates the NES version of the game. Do a side by side comparison some time and you'll see.
The difference between the NES version of Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake and the MSX version of Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake:
There is none because Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake never came out for the NES. What we here in America got (and only we here in America) was Snake's Revenge. Snake's Revenge was not the same game as MG2: SS.
If you are a Metal Gear fan at all, pick up Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 for the Wii when they are released. They are great games.

Taiso? Yeah, he's dead. He's all messed up.
The original MSX version of Metal Gear actually pits you against Metal Gear, hence the name. In the NES version, you blow up a super computer, for whatever reason, and then fight Big Boss. I think maybe you see unused Metal Gear laying around, but never see one in action.
America never got the original Metal Gear 2 (until MGS3: Subsistence came out). Instead we got Snake's Revenge, which was still a fun game, albeit not canon.

Yeah I remember playing a rom of the first one and I don't think I could even make it past the 4th screen I think because it is all about the stealth in these games

- This is pretty much my understanding ;P
I was one of the few lucky enough to actually be a fan on MG back in the day, and played through MG on the NES, I unfortunately didn't know about the MSX versions. But the end of MG on NES was both difficult and very weird. The story really didn't make much sense. But it was definitely a ground-breaking game in its gameplay. And by the time MGSolid came around, it seemed like the franchise has been reborn without losing any of its style
Then Kojima apparently went insane, lol.

Stealth is one of my favorite mechanics in games ! Now that I think about it, my favorite games have all had a stealth element. Even playing Oblivion, I naturally gravitated to a character who ended up finding enough gear to be 100% invisible all the time. But going down the list there's not just MGS, but games like Splinter Cell, Tenchu, Thief, Oblivion.
In fact, I've long thought it would be fun to make a campy ninja game based on chameleon-ninja whom can instantly blend into their background with the press of a button and remain invisible as long as they aren't walked into of move. There are precious few even ninja games that allow you to use stealth directly. Not an ounce of stealth in Ninja Gaiden, either in its original form or modern incarnations.
