Kotaku is reporting that Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb posting on his Xbox 360-centric blog today that Ballmer wasn't speaking about the Xbox platform during his interview with Gizmodo, instead saying those accessories were bound for the PC.
Quote:
"As we have said in the past, we have no plans to introduce a Blu-Ray drive for the Xbox 360," Hryb reiterated. "In fact, the future of home entertainment starts very soon when Xbox 360 becomes the first and only console to offer instant-on 1080p streaming HD movies."
Earlier, a report posted all over on the net said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer implied, the company is to bring Blu-ray playing accessories to the Xbox 360.
Mistake or early CES 2010 announcement outta-the-bag.
They need a standard disclaimer every time Ballmer opens his mouth: The following statements do not mean what they seem to mean. If you hear anything new or interesting from Mister Ballmer's statements, you heard something wrong or misunderstood his real meaning. Any news of significance is officially denied until a press release says otherwise.
The longer MS goes without blu-ray the more people float over to the PS/3. They have already lost or are in the process of losing many of their AAA exclusive franchises with Sony taking a page out of MS' own playbook.
The Sony "It does everything" commercials are very persuasive to anyone on the fence and the PS/3 is still one of the best blu-ray player deals on the market thanks to the ability to update. Lets not even talk about the awesomeness that is Uncharted 2.
blu-ray was obsolete the day it came out. it's only good for ripping and torrenting, which is itself a digital distribution model...one that neither sony nor MS profit off of. MS is right to avocate digital distribution.

You're full of shit bud. Blu-ray is stronger than ever...
Regarding Ballmer, he's a complete douche.

Sorry but nothing that I have seen available for digital distribution is as good as Blu-ray. Maybe if you are getting it illegally, but I want my movies to be as perfect as possible when I watch them. Zero downgrade in quality, and I really dont want to download 30+ gig files to get that. Plus I don't pirate.
So tell me where that is readily available.

Ironically, MS stole the page out of Sony's playbook. Sony is just too poor to play from that book anymore but they weren't too poor doing the N64/Saturn days.
I'm not sure where the shock and awe comes from at this. Microsoft doesn't wish to support a Sony-made product when their consoles are in direct competition. And?
sure - it'll get you through a dry spell, but ultimately, you want to get that mud for your turtle.
Some of us were dumb enough to get "married" which is an institution invented by women to force men to never have sex ever again. She said "I do" and never "did" again.

- We as gamers need to drop the old canard that bluray is specifically 'sony made' or sony-controlled.

Instant-on, 1080p HD movies... how many people have a T3 connection to their home? Not me! Let's say the video's clipping at 24 frames per second, that gives you 234,000 kilo-bits/frame. But, a single frame has some 2 million pixels at 1920x1080. So compression then. What's more, since most people using this won't have a T3 line, it'll be running even more compressed at T1 rates.
Now, I'm no expert on these things, this is just very quick and dirty math, but trying to stream 1080p is like photocopying a Rembrandt with all the compression, dithering, and image degradation that's bound to take place in the process. This is why content on disc won't die for a long, long time.
There have been a very few times when I've seen a video single with zero compression on an HDTV, it's just about the most beautiful thing ever. It's how HDTVs get sold. But, you take it home and turn anything on and there's compression artifacting everywhere. It's really disappointing. But, it's still better than what came before, but HDTVs can still have horrible picture quality when compression is out of control.
