The saga of Midway Games' bankruptcy fails to be amusing in any way today as job losses are announced at their Newcastle studio. The UK site was recently responsible for 'Wheelman' which featured Vin Diesel and was reviewed to middling scores. The last of their assets have finally been sold to Warner Bros. including Mortal Kombat.

Following a protracted bankruptcy and some last-minute legal wrangling, Midway Games has finally been sold. According to a corporate spokesperson, "the sale to Warner Bros. of substantially all of the assets, IP, and trademarks of Midway Games was closed this past Friday." The properties included Midway's vaunted Mortal Kombat fighting franchise, the next iteration of which will return to its ultraviolent, M-for-Mature-rated roots.
Though Midway has not yet revealed how the sale will affect operations at its Chicago, Illinois headquarters, a rep for the company did say that its British studio, which was not bought by Warner Bros., has been shuttered. "We can confirm that the Newcastle studio has been closed following the notification period required by UK law," a rep said. "We made every effort to find a buyer for the studio, but unfortunately none emerged during the period." Around 80 people worked at the studio, which developed this year's Vin Diesel vehicle The Wheelman. The fate of its current project, the action game Necessary Force, remains unclear.
Well, MediocreWay has been on a slow middle road to failure for years. The Mortal Kombat franchise alone is not enough to finance one crappy, soulless project after another.
Midway lost their way during the transition from 2d to 3D. Once, the name Midway one a game box meant something. Midway has been responsible for some great games.
They took a pretty big financial bath in recent years with stuff like Stranglehold and Blacksite, although they were in financial dire straits for some time before that.
This is a shame regardless of their lack of quality lately. I've been playing games with their name on it since the arcade/roller rink days in the early 80's.
