It looks like Battlefield Heroes has officially gone live, without as much as a mention from Electronic Arts. Maybe they're hoping to lessen the server load explosion? Who knows... anyways, its live. Go play it.
The beta never really felt like a beta to me. They were handing out the invites 50,000 at a time, and the microtransactions were already in place. It seems to me that if I had actually been beta testing the game, everything would have been free so it could have been, well, tested, I suspect the whole thing was just a way to keep the servers from doing a bellyflop.
As for the game, its fun for an afternoon. You won't find any deep strategy, but characters can invest experience in multiple abilities that can affect the outcome of a fight, such as a damage absorbing shield or the ability to consume nearby grenades for health. Experience can also purchase new weapons, though they are usually just modified versions of the starting weapons, giving you the option to fire faster at the expense of range, or vice-versa.
Like most games of this sort, the microtransactions are for things that don't directly affect combat, such as new clothes or temporary boosts to experience gain rate.
I played in the 'beta'... It wasn't that awesome to me. It felt too much like an mmo. Either pay or invest a lot of time to get awesome weapons (which have a duration). I really expected something like BF 1942.. but it's really not. It's entirely a new game, and it looked good but felt weird. Stiff character animations and what not. Not really my cup of tea.
I also hope they make the game easier to access. Just finding the website to load the game was near impossible. I don't know why you even need to go to the website to play it when it practically loads a stand-alone app full screen. Quake Live I can understand because it is VERY integrated into their site. BF Heroes just... isn't.
Here, and evil ace, this was not out in the open, i had to do a search and browse a couple different boards. But it seems like some sort of cookies issue.
