Mobile Fighting with Tekken and Soulcalibur on PSP

A pair of new games were announced today for the PSP and they're both fighters. Tekken 6 will be headed to the PSP, as well as Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny.

From IGN, the Tekken 6 confirmation:
Quote:
Namco Bandai didn't release many specifics, but we do know that the portable version of the game is set to release alongside the other console iterations and will pack additional stages, content, items, and an ad-hoc multiplayer mode using "original" and "fan favorite characters." The PSP version will also have "Ghost" Infrastructure mode so that a player can upload his or her character data as well as download others' to see how everyone's skills stack up.
Then from GameSpot, the Soulcalibur word:
Quote:
Broken Destiny isn't a port, though; the Project Soul team has built this version specifically to target beginners and novice players with SCIV's content but has added improvements. There will be arcade, versus, and survival modes, as well as a character creation mode, but the only details disclosed at this point are that there will be new parts to play with in the creation mode and that the other modes have been "evolved." What we do know is that a new single-player mode is being implemented to bring new players up to speed and show them the intricacies of the game--almost like an enhanced tutorial system. It is designed to help improve your fighting skills, so newcomers who might be intimidated by the series can find a way to ease into an intense fighting regimen. There are more than 80 exercise missions for you to hone your fighting skills in.
Is this the year of the PSP?

It can be pretty hard for me to pull of higher-level moves on a regular controller; I usually need an arcade stick setup to be able to play a fighting game fully. Given this, how would a fighting game work on a portable?

I know that there have been fighting games on the GBA, PSP and DS so far, but I haven't picked them up. Anyone have any experience with them? How do they play?

I've played several fighting games on the portable systems and many of them are quite good, in fact the PSP is easily the best handheld I've used for fighting games.

On the GBA I played Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Super Street Fighter II, and King of Fighters EX. They were all pretty good but the lack of buttons made them play differently. I think Mortal Kombat and SFA3 were the best of those.

On the DS I've played Ultimate Mortal Kombat and Guilty Gear and can't say I really enjoyed either.

On the PSP however, I've had a blast with some fighting games. Specifically Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Tekken: Dark Resurrection (a ported Tekken 5). Both of those games were awesome but Street Fighter Alpha 3 was my favorite hands down since it is one of my favorite fighting games anyway. I also played Darkstalkers, Mortal Kombat Unchained and Guilty Gear Judgement which I all enjoyed. Mortal Kombat had some cool extra game modes and the side scrolling beat em up in Guilt Gear was actually fun too.

I've even played the PS One version of Tekken 3, X-Men Vs. Street Fighter, Guilty Gear, Soul Blade, Marvel Vs Capcom, The Last Blade, Darkstalkers 3, KOF99, Bloody Roar, DOA, and more on my PSP in emulation and most of them played pretty great. Some of the 3D ones were a bit wierd but the 2D ones almost played flawlessy true to the PS One console.

The PSP is easily the best control layout for fighters and the screen is the nicest too. Ever since I first played Darkstalkers on it near launch I've been craving a Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 PSP game, now I've like a portalble Street Fighter 4 too. I'm more of a 2D fighting fan but I might give these a try if the reviews look good since Tekken on the PSP was awesome.

Nothing says "Year of the PSP" like watered-down ports from games that aren't amazingly great in the first place.

Soul Calibur 4 was by and large a big let-down, and of the little I've played of Tekken 6 in the arcades, it's a signifigant step back from 5.
