akin to the 360's move to add game to hard drive support midlife, causing some of the more optimized games (that assumed the option would never exist) that came before to actually perform worse.

Last generation games (PS2, Xbox, GC) actually look *wonderful* if you increase the resolution. I was playing through Prince of Persia: Sands of Time recently at 1680x1050 and I was surprised with how nice it still looked. You see far less jaggies and are actually able to marvel at the great art direction, constant framerates help too.
(PC version of the game, naturally)

Except it is nothing at all like the pet rock craze. If you can't afford multiple systems, that's cool, but many people enjoy their Wiis. It has brought a level of interactivity and physicality to video games that was previously insufficiently unexplored.

I'm not sure why "gamers" feel the need to pray for Nintendo's downfall or demean their success. It is especially confusing given that your favorite console will never, in its entire life-cycle, sell as many systems as the Wii, and come no where near the DS. If that is what "failure" looks like, what exactly do you call MS and Sony?

The entire premise of this supposes a prescience on the part of publishers that does not exist. They plan development based on trends 3 years in advance? Like they did for the PS3 and 360, which is why they don't have strong Wii titles already available? Great system! Seems to be working!

I assume an HD Wii would be like playing PS1 games on PS3. You see the games in all their horrifically crisp ugliness.

(I'd still do it. Stuff like Brawl couldn't look that bad.)

I hear ya! All I'm really saying is that I'd like to be able to play Mario Galaxy without Mario taking up 40" of the 65" screen. As a pc gamer, I'm used to having a large FOV, and 640x480 just doesn't do it for me.

Everyone: An HD Wii? That's dumb. Waaaaaahh. Upconverting is impossible. Waaaaaaaah.

Me: But you'd still buy one, right?

Everyone: Well, that goes without saying.

Ok Devs and publishers, now that every mom and 30 thousand dollar wanna be millionaire yuppie has one, maybe its time to concentrate on making games for it to play on other than shovel ware.

I guess it would depend on how the resolution increase was handled.

If we're just talking about more pixels on screen but the graphical elements maintaining their pixel counts then you're going to see more on screen than you did before and things might appear sharper by virtue of being smaller. Some scaling might be needed on text to maintain readability. An example of this kind of this is the widescreen mod for the Infinity Engine games.

If we're talking about more pixels on screen but the graphical elements maintaining their size relative to the total screen size then you're probably going to see less "jaggies" and so on due to finer granularity, but if the texture quality is not great then the improvement in overall quality is possibly not going to be worth much.

A Wii-i (like a DSi) is a very real possibility, especially if Nintendo thinks it can put in just enough features to get people to buy another system. HDMI support, graphics upconverting, DVD support (finally), revamped motion controls, they can really afford to do whatever they want with such a large hardware lead, and now would be the best time to do it when the 'fad factor' has begun to start fading.

Ninty is unlikely to ever add standard DVD support, simply because they refuse to pay the $20 licensing fee / console to ship it in. Adding the functionality via an add-on remote or w/e similar to how last generation is a possibility. Though, I fully expect Wii-2 to use the same small form factor disc as the Wii. Making your console small is a huge selling point in the Japanese market, an advantage they won't likely go back on. Besides, everyone has DVD these days, it's largely an anachronism.
