Computer and Video Games has interviewed Josh Olson, High Voltage Software Producer, about their upcoming Wii exclusive FPS, The Conduit.
Quote:
Why is Wii the best platform for The Conduit and what does it have over other platforms as a host for FPS games?
Olson: Much has been made of our tech and rightly so - we feel that that we're the best-looking game on the console. It's really all about the gameplay though, and in targeting the Wii we focused very heavily on the unique controls. We feel that with The Conduit we have a perfectly viable 'third scheme' out there for FPS games and we look forward to throwing ourselves into the never-ending debate between the relative merits and shortcomings of the dual analogue and the mouse-and-keyboard among fanboys.
I don't think that previous Wii FPS titles have made a compelling argument that the pointer and Nunchuk belong in the discussion. With The Conduit, we think we absolutely belong, and hope that more developers look at developing Wii-exclusive FPS titles that take full advantage of what it offers.
It's true, Wii controls, despite the initial enthusiasm that they could revolutionize FPS games, have not born that out.
I remember picking up Crysis on Wii, just to try it (it was cheap >_>) and the game was virtually unplayable. The idea of turning by moving the remote to the edge of the screen is untenable, IMO. Though, the controls seem successful for the Metroid, but I haven't played it yet.
We can expect that, if Microsoft comes out with a Wii-like interface for their next system (virtually guaranteed) that is will be optimized as an FPS interface. That will be interesting to see, a new Halo with Wii-like controls.
I had mor efun playing Red Steel's mutliplayer than i have almost any other multiplayer game since Halo 1 and it was all due to the controls.
I think people get mad that the experience is different than what they're used to, but overall, whether it makes you target stuff faster or slower, I thought it was overall much more fun to use.
I mean, in the same vein, I can't play RE5 because my first experinece with RE4 was on the wii and I so thoroughly enjoyed that control scheme that doing it with a controller is unthinkable.
I haven't played Crysis on the Wii, but have played a Metroid Prime and RE4, and the controls worked really well on both those games.
I have to agree about RE5 too. I've played most of the way through it now, and RE4 on the Wii was much better, simply because of the excellent controls.
The only reason to get RE5 is for the co-op mode.
That was actually a rather good interview. Especially loved the response to the gameplay tuning question. I hope it turns out rather well, wouldn't mind a good FPS on the Wii.
