When people argue that Sony needs to sell more features for $100 less, they are being idiots. The correct market to draw form the markeptplace is that Sony needs to sell less hardware features for their reduction in $100 off of the sticker price.
But Sony has stripped out all of the backwards compatibility (for PS2 games) in 2 steps, going from a purely hardware solution, to a combination hardware/software, to nothing. Consumers haven't seen anything back from Sony's removal of features other than a larger hard drive and some confusion.
The fact is, if you need or want all of the features the PS3 offers, it's a better deal for you. It doesn't mean it's a better deal for everyone. Some people just want their game console to be a game console. Some people wan't it to be a media player (or extender), web browser, or bluray player. That doesn't mean every one does.
I believe at this point they are both selling enough that companies won't abandon them and now they are both great purchases for US gamers. I believe we are in the best spot from all this, well....minus Nintendo you sell so well to moms and new yuppies but dam if I don't miss you)
