Xbox 360 Outsells PS3 and Wii in Japan

Edge Online is reporting that Microsoft's Xbox 360 has outsold Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii in Japan for the week ending February 22. The surge in sales is credited to the release of Square Enix's role-playing game, Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope.

Quote:
Xbox Sales rocketed to 25,334 units following the release of Square Enix’s Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope, which itself sold 162,232 units in its first week.

The sales surge marks the first time in weeks that the chart positions have changed.

Nintendo’s Wii sold 16,973 units; the console’s lowest figure yet, and a mere tenth of the sales volume the console had achieved nine weeks ago. Sales of the Wii have been on a consistent decline, initially masked by the widespread sales downturn in January, but continuing its downturn while other consoles showed signs of recovering from the new-year slowdown.

Hooray? A one week jump due to a popular game is not exactly new, the exact same thing happened with Infinite Undiscovery and Blue Dragon I believe.

I know people are saying hooray, woopty-do etc, but you are missing the finer point. It proves that the hooplah that Japan refuses to accept a none asian console is nothing but FUD. Bring the games and all cultures will bring the cash, honestly it's good to see.

PS someone save this URL for the next time someone yells that XYZ system is failing due to a cultural issue. Worst case it will save at least 12 pages of internet vitriol and/or flamefests =)

While I don't disagree with what you said, I don't think FUD means what you think it means.

Not that I disagree with your sentiment that Japan is willing to accept a game console from a non-Japanese company, but this particular anecdote doesn't really prove it either way. It's just as likely that MS has had to go far above and beyond what Sony would have had to do to achieve what modicum of success that they're seeing in Japan. I mean, look at the JRPG situation--the 360 is the best represented platform for JRPGs this generation. Now granted, that's just one of the important genres in Japan, but it's a very significant metric for that gaming market. But despite that, the 360 is still a distant third there (albeit certainly a far more respectable third than last gen with the original Xbox).

Now I'd be interested to see what sales would look like if MS could swing an exclusive main-line Dragon Quest game.

I would argue it is inherently a cultural issue, because story/narrative, art, and the like are all affected by culture. What changed here is not the acceptance of a foreign console; what changed is the presence of a culturally relevant game ON the foreign console, and exclusively so.

That's my take.

It probably has more to do with the fact that most gamers in Japan already have a Wii and a PS3.

Maybe the 360 is outselling because everyone in Japan already has a PS3 or a Wii

It's strange. I bought this game but have no desire to play it. I'm more wanting to start up Phantasy Star II on my Sega Ultimate Collection.l

Wrong thread? Star Ocean.. FPS ? The thread was about how the sales of Star Ocean increased sales of the Xbox system for a week putting it into first place. I searched twice yours is the only referance to Halo!

Not to mention that some people just really enjoy FPS on a console, I know horror of horrors for someone to feel that way.

I look forward to Star Ocean with great anticipation (for when it's cheaper...I don't buy $50+ games).
