The official Need for Speed Blog has been updated with a work-in-progress image of the user interface in Electronic Arts' upcoming action-racing game, Need for Speed World Online.

When he'd sent the screen I asked him to give me a bit more information about what we’re looking at and he was happy to help out: “Key to the concept of NFS World Online is the user interface which has been built from the ground up to take advantage of the PC architecture. Instead of a traditional console view of a game, we’re using a user-selectable gadget interface designed specifically for the PC. The system allows the gamer to choose which components of the interface they want to add to their game. The gadgets are really flexible and offer a wide range of display options: docked/undocked, floating in the game window or just sitting outside of the game space. A lot of gamers now have more than one monitor so you could keep the game window entirely clean and then have all the gadgets sit in the other monitor. We think it’s about time PC gamers had games that allowed them to arrange their information their way.
The downloadable free-to-play title is being co-developed by EA Black Box and EA Singapore. You can find out more about the MMORG in this Q&A with Scott Henshaw from Black Box.
As a certified racing sim junkie, who can't afford iRacing.com right now (steering wheel and pedal set required - my G25 recently bit the dust), I'm looking forward to this title.
I'm sure it will play well with an Xbox 360 controller or the Saitek X52 flight stick I'm currently using for sims. While I much prefer the depth of racing sims that does not mean I still don't love tearing up the track in an arcade racer. I hope they can pull this off.
didnt they try this before and it failed miserably
Yes, I played it for a while. It suffered from major lag issues.
From the Q&A I linked to in the article:

Didn’t you guys already try this with Motor City Online?
We tried an online game with American muscle cars on a subscription basis. Some of the experience and the things we learned about the community features will translate, but NFS World has some marked differences. The new game plays in an open-world environment with a huge number of cars and events. Modes such as Co-op, Team Events and presence of cops all provide a very different experience than Motor City Online delivered.
That is the worst GUI ever. Why are there two maps?
Why is the chat not transparent???
If you look at a higher resolution version of the screenshot you can see there's an option to adjust the opacity level. The map appears to provide a zoomed in view and be one of the 'user-selectable gadgets' that you can close if you wish.
Sure can! As soon as I have the details I'll post an Evil Avatar Race Team information thread in the PC Games forum. I'll try to add a link to it in a news article on the game if I can.

You obviously didn't read the article or snippet at all. The GUI is designed to be fully customizable by the user; you can select the placement of all of the objects. If you have a second monitor, you can just dump all of that stuff onto #2 and leave the main screen completely uncluttered.
Um.. maybe a dumb question, but why can't a console have those features as well? Other then the 2nd monitor bit (even that could be possible actually) why can't we have those features be in the console menus and select them on and off? I don't see how they can claim only a PC can do this.

Seconded.
Is this a PC only title? Seems like it might do well on 360 at the very least.
The first person to make a really really good console MMO makes a billion. Here's hoping it's DCUO!

This is originally an Asian centric game. In Asia, PC still rules the roost and kids are not allergic to computer.
This seems to be a great idea, the basic concept always has, but it looks likes its going to be a cheap attempt at another online racer. Ill be there day two, regardless.
