News of a new technical hitch with the 360. It appears that expired e-mail addresses may well screw up your Gamercard.
Quote:
Microsoft is investigating a serious system design flaw in its Xbox Live accounts system which is leaving some active Xbox 360 gamers with no choice but to start afresh with new Gamertags, deleting any achievements they may have accumulated in the past four years.
The problem stems from the Windows Live ID email address that's required to set up a Gold membership, and specifically those which are automatically set to expire after a period of inactivity, such as Hotmail.
If a user allows their Windows Live ID email to expire - perhaps because they use an alternative such as Gmail on a day-to-day basis - the email account is deleted, along with any Gamertag that may be associated with it, even if the user has set up additional non-Hotmail addresses in the meantime.
You'd think that MS would simply check for gamertag associations before deleting.
I think every single time I've had to log into my 'Live ID', my hotmail account was resuming from some form of 'suspended for inactivity' state. How is it that just recently they've started deleting these accounts?
Also: how can downloads be unaffected? That's all tied to Gamertag. Maybe they only appear unaffected because they hadn't tried using them on another console yet? You certainly couldn't download them again if you have to junk the Gamertag.
I'd call that "affected".
Wow. And I hate change more than most people. If my gamertag went and died, I'd go and have a good cry.
Is it just me, or is Microsoft's Xbox support among the worst customer service of any product? Granted, it was the 80s, but I recall talking to Nintendo tech support back in the day, and they were actually in Seattle, acutally willing to help you.
On any given call to Microsoft Xbox support though, I've been part of such awesome exchanges as:
DM: "Why am I forcefully being logged out of Xbox Live every time I turn on my Xbox???"
Miss Subcontinent Support Specialist: "Because you've been bad." <!>

Classic. Thanks, mom!!!
Worst Customer Service... you should trying being a seller on EBAY. They are beyond, hands down... the worst.
Ditto, live ID linked to gmail... better having it linked to an address I actually use!
Also, as much as people like to hate on MS support... they have actually been really good when I have had to contact them, although my location probably has something to do with that. Firstly, finding the bloody support number was near on impossible (the HK xbox page is in Chinese, which I don't read), but once found, they were very helpful.
uh oh, my account is tied to my old university address. When they finally purge the accounts for my year, will my xbox live account croak and die?
I changed my contact email long ago - but I still have to login with the old email address. Seemed strange at the time, but now... kinda getting worried.

Just change your primary address to whatever you use now. It's pretty straightforward, you just need to go to https://account.live.com.

Problem is, if your primary e-mail is a Live-enabled one, like a Hotmail account, YOU CAN'T CHANGE IT.

Nobody on EvAv is stupid enough to use a service like Live (which actively eats our credit cards) with an email address we don't use regularly.
"Here's my credit card number. By the way I don't use this email address, so if you abuse my account and steal all my money, I won't be looking at the email reciepts. Here's my ass: rape it please."

I actually do use my hotmail account for LIVE and hadn't logged into it for a bit ... OOPS. But when I did log in, my emails were gone (nothing exciting) and my account reactivated. I've never had a problem with the service however.
And as far as it goes regarding credit cards -- check your statements. There is so much fake stuff in emails half the time that it's really the only sensible thing to do. I can't believe how many people don't take the time to just look them over!
