The NYCC has turned out to be something of a gold mine for game news. In a panel with Gears of War 2 writer (what a proud title) Joshua Ortega he dropped a couple of lines which have led some to suspect a Gears 2 prequel. Perhaps The Pendulum Wars? From 1up.
Quote:
It seemed like one of those fan questions that Joshua Ortega, the writer of Gears of War 2, would dance around during tonight's New York Comic-Con Gears of War panel -- were there plans for doing a prequel that dealt with the events of E-Day, the day the Locust emerged and attacked the human race?
"You will not be disappointed in the next ten years," Ortega said. "It's a ten-year plan. Gears is long-term. The lancer is the new lightsaber."
On a panel focusing on all things Gears, the E-Day tidbit stood out from the pack. Sure, it was cool to see Carlos Ferro, the voice of Dom, mock his own performance and talk about his library of Gears-branded collectibles, and it was fun to listen to the panel talk about the comic book bridging the first games and the second game, but the mention of a decade's worth of Crimson Omens is the statement that got the room of fanboys all hot and bothered.
Prequel sound nice and all but first I need to feel the Locust Queen's skull give way and crush in my hands. That fight ain't finished , not by a long shot. Dom deserves no less.

Interesting idea though, now if they can fix the graphics so its actually interesting that would be cool. Although maybe thats just the fault of the Unreal engine.

I doubt they turn this into Mushroom Kingdom. Don't hold your breath.

Thats setting the bar kinda low, Star Wars is terrible, I should have never rewatched it and kept it a fine childhood memory.
Oh boy! A prequel! Maybe they can tell us what the fuck has been going on, since there has been nearly no story telling whatsoever up to this point.
Besides that, how could everyone be excited that they admitted that they will be making Gears of War games for a decade? I enjoy the first two so far, but there are few games that can last that long and not become stale. UT anyone?

Setting a prequel much earlier in the war could be an excellent opportunity to do something new with the franchise gameplay-wise. Who knows if they would, though.
I wouldn't mind seeing a prequel, but I also think there's no good god damn reason to go back into the history of an already extremely lame story.
Gears has a great premise, but the narrative is lacking in style and substance. Not to mention that Michael Bay probably could have written better dialogue than what we saw in either of the games.
I'd like to see a squad based, four player co-operative Gears game where you customize your load out with a War gear system like Warhammer, mixed with the progression of CoD4. Either keep it persistent across the SP and the MP, or separate the modes and do something different with each.
It seems like such a missed opportunity to add some much needed depth to the multiplayer.
Unless this economy causes a longer lifecycle for this gen.
That would actually be Microsoft's best idea ever if they did that.
There is no reason for new hardware right now. I feel like this generation has much more room to expand. Hell, they are barely scartching the surface of what is possible at this point.
If they release new hardware early again, I'll scream.

They released new hardware early because it was a smart business move from their side. They had some lousy contracts re: production on the original box. Didn't have the lead, and the economy was stronger than now.
If you look at it cyclical, the leader of a current gen is never the first to launch the next one. They don't need to.
This time I would expect Sony to be the 1st to do so. Even if it's just a rebadged PS3 with some extra features. Rename and remarket the product to attempt to regain the market lead.
Now I know that the SDF is going to come in and say "it's not going to happen." and this time they are probably right. But, it's not because Sony wants to do it that way, more than the economy won't support another generational shift.

?????
They are going for a particular aesthetic, "destroyed beauty", and they have accomplished that. And how can this be the fault of the engine? Have you played Mass Effect? Bioshock? Have you seen the videos for Dragon Age?
