MCV has a story up regarding Sony's non-response to the rumors of a PSP2 that popped up on IGN's website. Looks like they're a little testy.
Quote:
However, a source close to Sony has told MCV that: “Clearly, being a quiet time of year, many, what we thought to be credible websites, are making up stories about PSP2, and how it allows you to teleport across the globe, travel through time, and will be powered by the horns of baby rhinoceroses.
“Hopefully, you can sense a mild tone of sarcasm, which should hopefully indicate how ‘on the money’ IGN are. Needless to say, we don't comment on rumour or speculation, but this is nonsense.”
Yay, Sony! Someone needs to speak up about the rumor/lie engine that is IGN. Even in the days of the N64, IGN seemed like the "Big Business" site of all the gaming portals. Now, it's just TMZ for games.

The truth is, Sony wants to emulate the sucess of the Wii and go right for the mainstream. The spec is below:
System Name: psPii
Spec: 8 bit main processor, 64k RAM (about 3 times the Wii spec)
Screen: 4 inch grey scale
Media: UMD, 2nd generation. Load times are down to 45 minutes
Battery: NiCad ... about 8 minutes at full charge
Even though this is a public message board, I ask that these top secret spec not be distributed. Thank you!

Are you trying to make fun of the Wii? Are you trying to make fun of Sony? Make fun of IGN? what exactly are you attempting to accomplish with this terrible post?

I apologize if I failed to meet your standards for what makes a good post. I shall hang my head in shame for days. Hopefully I will accomplish more with my future posts.
Back to topic:
Sony's main issue with the majority of their hardware is that they're constantly looking at what the other guys are doing, and then attempt to implement it haphazardly. Couple that with their efforts to stick to Sony proprietary tech, and they tend to hurt themselves further.
For example: implementation of the UMD and even the Mem Stick Pro Duo (vs a standard SD card) is a reason why the PSP is not as good as it can be. The UMD is slow, and the drive is a big battery drain. SD cards are more popular and are cheaper then their Memstick counterparts.
It can be argued that Blu Ray is holding the PS3 back from reaching the masses, as it keeps the pricepoint higher than the competition.
Also, look at their track record when it comes to trying to cash in on their competition's features. Was the dual shock's motion controls a benefit to their games, or just a sloppy knee jerk reaction to the Wii? Was the PSN a carefully laid out network that ties gamers together, or a poor man's X Box Live?
So basically, does a PSP2 NEED a touch screen, or are they considering it (if true) because of the success of the iPhone and NDS?
In trying to move forward, as well as mimic other people's features, they tend to end up moving backwards instead. It would be nice if Sony thought this whole thing through, and gave a solid, dedicated device that addressed the needs of their audience, and not simply what they believe are the strengths of othere people's systems mixed with their proprietary media.
